Best to get an active pair. Whatever WiiM streamer you use will essentially act as the digital preamp. That how I have my Vanatoos set up with a Pro (and using the WiiM Sub -- associated with the Pro -- connected via the speakers' sub output jack).
My primary target would be to use a pair to replace my Vanatoo active minimonitors in the master bedroom, and combine them with the Sub Pro that's currently providing bass support for the Vanatoos. That could be a very compelling setup with RoomFit, given that the Sound and the Sub components...
From my use so far, I'd generalize that if you:
Use WiiM devices as streamers in your audio system(s);
Use their room correction and equalization;
Could use some well-integrated deep bass support for some main speakers (whether they be bookshelf-sized or floorstanding),
...then it blends in...
I think I'd want to use much better instrumentation than a phone to measure frequency response, and frankly I'd also want to remove room aberrations from the testing. I think it should be only a very short while before someone at ASR posts some results from their testing.
My guess is that the...
What I haven't found documented with Vanatoo is whether any digital processing is applied to an incoming analog stream, or only when the input is digital. IOW, whether there's ADA conversion going on. It hasn't been a factor before now, since I found Vanatoo's DAC/processing to yield slightly...
I was just looking for a logical starting point to see how that would sound compared to the default (which is the highest settable crossover frequency). Especially if it eliminates any directionality.
I'm trying to as well. The Vanatoo specs claim frequency response to 48Hz (-3db). Theoretically, the sub's crossover should be set to about 65-70Hz, but for whatever reason, whenever RoomFit is in play, the sub's crossover is automatically set to 110Hz and apparently can't be saved to something...
Just some early impressions integrating the Sub Pro with my small Vanatoo T1 active speakers.
Setup:
WiiM Pro streamer (firmware 4.8.724036)
Vanatoo Transparent One active speakers (original release)
WiiM Sub Pro (firmware 5.2.724241)
Line out from Pro to speakers
Pro and Sub WiFi sources
All...
Actually, the sub does have its own mic, most likely used for the same purposes as the mic on other WiiM devices. It's located just below the front port.
Isn't time alignment in the WiiM environment pertinent only to multiroom synchronization? In which case the sub's synchronization would be associated with its linked main speaker(s) and streaming/amplification stage...so in other words, the microphone-equipped WiiM device driving those transducers.
The Sound does look very promising. I'm curious how a pair of them will compare sonically to the similarly-sized Vanatoo active speakers in my bedroom that are being driven from a WiiM Pro.
