Hello, a quick update. Although the issue happens a lot less frequently, it's not completely gone. Sometimes I still experience the occasional dropout. The source for that optical in is a Pi3 with a Hifiberry Digi+, running moode. Needless to say there is no issue when directly connected to the DAC.
