With a USB HD connected to Ultra port, is it possible to access and modify the files over a network? Ie access them on a laptop, and delete a file etc?

Just get a Raspberry Pi and install a proper music server. Set it up with your USB stick then tuck it away by your router and forget about it. It will provide far more functionality than a WiiM with USB stick. There are many flavours of music server that will work on a Pi with easy access from PC to write new files etc. Use the WiiM for what it is good at - streaming music.

Which comes back to another opinion (like a universal WiiM Home app) I often post - I see the WiiM USB media feature as fine for those who have a modestly sized static music library and who only require basic features. Beyond that, as you suggest, install a competent music server like LMS, Minimserver, Plex etc which will give you the flexibility that you'd want...

Of course, I could work around Ultra's current limitations with a music server on a Pi. However, with better support for playlists (which is already in the pipe) and the requested feature for writing to attached USB storage there wouldn't be anything left I'd need a music server for. In addition to that I'd prefer not to power yet another device for this purpose. I'd rather synchronize the USB media manually through my PC.

Horses for courses but the result of "better support for playlists" will be somewhat subjective. Virtually anything would be better than now but personally I doubt WiiM will ever get near what is freely available already out there in conjunction with a proper solution. A Pi consumes virtually no power when on standby and very little when fully active.

What features are you referring to that speak for a separate music server and won't be implemented for the Ultra in the near future?
Honestly, since I've never used a music server I may be don't get what I'm mssing.

Until you use a good one, you don't know what you're missing. I use a raspberry Pi 5 with picoreplayer /LMS and I would not go back to by by folder. It's also the only reason why I bought a Wiim as it supports squeezelite. I have other Squeezeboxes so the whole system works from one app- Yamaha AVR, LG OLED TV, phones, Squeezebox Radio, Squeezebox touches, Wiim Ultra, and a Sonos connect.

Lyrics, song, artist and cover art download.

If you have a PC install it and see what you think.

I do have a pi5/picoreplayer used as a server, pointing to music on a NAS. I'm looking for a system for brother, he's got a Ultra, but not a NAS so using the minidla scanner in the Ultra, but being able to browse and alter the folders over the LAN would be useful, saves disconnecting the HD from the Ultra moving the HD to the computer etc.

LMS
Full integration of local files with favourites from Spotify, Qobuz, Tidal, Pandora etc
Vast internet radio dictionary many with full metadata and cover art.
BBC Sounds plugin that is almost as good as the official app.
Radio Paradise plugin with full metadata / cover art.
Superb playlist management. Play a local file(s), follow it with a Qobuz album/track, let the server carry on playback with a focused mix from everywhere.
Music & Artist Info plugin. Biography, Reviews and Lyrics
Works perfectly with all WiiM devices (Most via built in Squeezelite - Mini via UPnP/DLNABridge)
As @rccarguy says - you don't know what is missing until you have used it

Given you're on Android with music on OneDrive have you ever tried Symfonium?

I set my brother up with it last week using Lightweight Music Server as the backend, although for WiiM users I'd probably use a UPnP compatible server to allow access through WHA too e.g. Jellyfin, Emby, Plex e.t.c.

I've been using it for a couple of months now and it's been flawless with WiiM, as it has with Android Auto and in offline mode too. It's the Swiss Army knife of audio players/controllers.

Thank you, I'm going to check out LMS!

However, since I dislike the idea of renting music I rarely use streaming services. So at least some of the features do not sound as exciting fo me as they sound for many other people around here.

I don't have any subscription services either.

ALso with LMS you can do this.

On each artist branch split CD's into albums, singles, EP etc

Note the A-Z, so you can straight to the artist, and album first letter, ie I can go to ZZ Top, and say "Zebra" album of theirs instead of scrolling down thousands of artists, then dozens of albums. Pay attention to artist images and album images.

You don't get that with browse by folder, or servers that don't downloading missing artist/album covers

Top left, can use multi room players. Home Cinema is the Wiim Ultra, Master bedroom is SB touch

I'll be testing a Sonos with UPNP bridge this week at least that piece of junk will be usable, and be seen as similar device

Oh no, never heard of Symfonium before. Going to check this one out as well.
For the past two years I've been using CloudPlayer for playing music from OneDrive. But Symfonium seems to come with more interesting features. Looks very nice, indeed!

Even without using "rental services" LMS is justified for me, simply for it's very excellent "Radio Now Playing" plug-in.

This aggregates hundreds of high SQ internet radio channels from around the world.

Along with the integrated Music & Artist Information lookup this provides an excellent means to discover new music & handy when you want someone else to select the music.
