AirPlay not working on one of two Pro Plus (Spotify Connect works)

Hello everyone,

I have two Pro Plus devices at home, both set up almost identically. Both play perfectly via Spotify Connect, but only one of the devices can be connected via AirPlay. Both devices have the latest (and identical) firmware, and I’ve already restarted them several times.

Is there a specific setting I’m not aware of? Or is there a fault with the device?

Many thanks and best regards!

You may need to factory reset the one that isn't working and maybe even adding it again to the Apple Home app (although that latter step may not be strictly necessary).

Try restarting your network equipment. Do you know if the version of the Pro Plus circuit board is the same in both units?

Thank you very much for your replies.

I’ve reset the device to its factory settings twice. But it didn’t help. AirPlay is still not enabled (sometimes it takes a while to connect, but here the message ‘Unable to connect’ appears straight away).

I actually know nothing about the circuit boards, as I don’t want to open the casing. But the packaging of the second device looks slightly different.

Where did you buy that Pro Plus? Is it brand new?

There was some buzz a while back about the non-AirPlay-compatible Pro model. I don’t know if there’s a similar model for the Pro Plus, but I just wondered.

It was brand new, yes. I bought it from an eBay seller. Well, if it turns out there’s a technical issue, I’ll send the device back.

I’ve also read about the non-AirPlay version, but the device shows up as an AirPlay device. It just doesn’t work when I try to connect to it.

What names do you use for the WiiM devices? While not strictly required, it’s best to avoid using special characters or spaces in the device name, as this can sometimes cause issues with device discovery or connectivity.

See this post where you can get some info about your device and its PCB version. Maybe worth running that with the ip address for each device and compare the results.

I’ve had a look into this. The device that works has PCB version 2, while the one with the AirPlay issue has version 4. Interestingly, the working Pro+ identifies itself on the home network using the name I’ve assigned it, whereas the problematic device continues to use its default name from the factory settings. I’ve had a bit of a play around with it, but haven’t noticed any difference (see below).

Yes, I’d already suspected as much and tried some very simple names, but unfortunately that didn’t work either.

Renaming WiiM devices with AirPlay is usually done in the Apple home app iirc. Maybe try adding both to the Apple home app if you haven't already done that.

Have you submitted a ticket to WiiM yet after the device fails to connect? They may be able to discern something from your device logs which they get when you raise a ticket using the more/feedback route in the app.

Is this really a thing? All of my AirPlay compatible WiiM devices have been renamed many times in the WiiM Home app, and all show up as AirPlay targets with their correct current names, and they also update when I decide to alter them again.

I have never used the Apple Home app in connection with any of my WiiM devices.

I certainly recall that being the case way back - the ability to rename my WiiM Mini is still greyed out, and it was reported that renaming in the Apple home app was the way round that.

Agree, I do exactly the same. I’ve never had to integrate any device – be it a Wii, Sonos or B&O – into the Apple Home app either. Apart from that one device, everything works perfectly.

This is a good Idea, I'll check this out cause it seems to be a deeper network issue.

I have just renamed my WiiM Mini while it is currently being used in a group as an AirPlay receiver, and there was no problem encountered, so I have renamed it again back to its previous name.

The music stopped playing shortly after renaming the Mini, so I just had to select the altered name of the AirPlay target on my iPhone, and was able to restart playback from where it stopped.

I remember seeing this issue before. Wiim pro plus (essential)

Also bought on ebay.

When I took a closer look, I realized it was the same thread as the link I posted in #6.

In the getStatusex results, do both units share the same "streams" value? For my Mini and Pro Plus, it ends in "fd", whereas for my Ultra which doesn't support Airplay, it ends "fc".

Thank you for all your helpful comments. I’ve checked the hardware version, the packaging and the streaming specifications: the device should definitely support AirPlay or AirPlay 2. It is not an ‘Essential’ version, either in terms of the purchase details or the hardware version. I’ll now have to wait for a response from Wiim Support. I’ll keep you updated.
