I asked because I have a Marantz AV receiver in another system that has Heos, and I was curious to compare them in the same system using the dac in the Ultra.
The Marantz has no digital out, so I had to use the analog outs.
I had a Marantz 30n in the main system before I got my first Wiim Pro, so I was familiar with Heos and it's crappy app, so I was just interested in the streaming aspect using a different dac than Marantz, and I heard that Heos has improved now with hires streaming.
So, I tried it going through the Ultra, analog in to analog out to preamp. Streaming Amazon HD the Heos stream sounds surprisingly good, much better than the Ultra stream. Bigger, bolder, richer, the Ultra was thinner sounding.
No EQ, all flat with the volumes set as close as I could get them. So I am sure some EQ could help the Ultra, but just goes to show that not all streamers are created equal.
Where the Ultra really has a big advantage is its app, with its ability to add URLs for radio stations compared to Heos use of Tunein that really socks quality wise.
