I really can't figure out how to link music playlist to a preset button. It is a WiiM home native playlist of music files on an SMB share, if that makes any difference. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Hi,
As far as I know, playlists created in the WiiM home app can't be saved as presets. You need to create the playlists in advance.

Thanks, I was beginning to think that this was the case. What do you mean by "create the playlists in advance"?

I don’t know much about SMB shares, so I may have said something off the mark..

If you want to add files stored on a NAS to a preset, I think you can open “Home Music Share” in the WiiM app and add any folder (playlist) from the media server to a preset from there.

I have a playlist on a USB flash drive registered as a preset.

If you tap the star icon on a folder to add it to your bookmarks, you can also register that bookmark as a preset.

Thanks again.

I have already configured the WiiM Home App to access my SMB Share (folder) containing my music files and can play them through my sound system.

I have created "native" (WiiM) playlists to play different selections of music from the SMB share, I think that the idea of a playlist is that it is a list of music files that allows this to be done without copying the original music files to multiple folders.

What I want to do is to link various play lists to various Presets. I can't find a way to do that with "native" WiiM Home playlists.

I have figured out how to create an mu3 file and use it in the WiiM App, something that I waned to do anyway. I thought that it might be possible to link a Preset to to a playlist text file, such as m3u but I have had no luck there either.

I'm not sure if this will be helpful, but here's how to add a stream URL to a preset. We'll be using an open network stream.

Thanks for the suggestion but I am really looking for a way to do this within the WiiM Home App. The frustrating thing is that the WiiM App Manual illustrates how to do it but the menu items shown just don't appear when running the current version of the App. Perhaps there functionality has been lost in recent versions.

Out of my trials and tribulations I think that could be some merit in using m3u files for playlists rather then the native playlists. Because they are stored in text files on the SMB share, they can be backed up and they can be shared by multiple devices. Yes they have to be manually created and edited manually but it is a simple procedure.

Sorry I couldn’t be of more help. Just for reference, could you tell me how that m3u file appears in the WiiM App? If you’re able, I’d appreciate it if you could post a screenshot.

You navigate to the folder where the file is, locate the file and open it. Instead of playing music, WiiM displays the playlist from and you can select which track to start playing from. I have exported my list of file names to a text and I working on an Excel worksheet to assist in selecting tracks and creating m3u file. Nothing fancy, just a helper. WiiM seems to get additional meta data from the internet, as best it can.

There's a nice looking App in the Microsoft Store called MP3TAG. It can retrieve the music metadata from all the music files in a directory and generate M3U files for selected tracks. It can perform tasks such as replacing spaces in file names with %20, as required for WiiM.

Now, if only I could find a way to assign M3U files to Preset buttons:).
So, will this way work? 🙂

How to Assign an M3U Playlist to a WiiM Preset Button

1. Prepare the HTTP URL from Your NAS
Make sure to host your M3U file via your NAS's web server or media server to get an HTTP/HTTPS URL (e.g., http://192.168.x.x/playlist.m3u).

*Note: Standard SMB paths (smb://) might not work in the Open Network Stream section.
*Bonus Tip: Ensure the audio file paths inside the M3U file are also accessible via your local network.

2. Add to WiiM Home App
Open the WiiM Home app, go to the "Browse" tab, and select "Open Network Stream." Paste your M3U file's HTTP URL into the field and save it.

3. Assign to a Preset
Play the newly added stream. While it's playing, tap the three-dot menu (...) on the "Now Playing" screen or from your favorites/history, select "Add to Preset," and choose your preferred pre
set number.

Thanks, I will give that a try.

This is how the M3U playlist looks when generated by MP3TAG.

I managed to get my M3U playlist file to appear in a couple of media serbers, the QNAP Media Server Add-on and Minim but It the was still no option to link the playlist to a Preset. When accessing music via a media server, the entire list of tracks can be added to a Preset but not play lists.

In general, accessing music through either media server on my QNAP NAS seems very buggy (in fact unusable) so I think that I will take a break for a while, this has become a bit of a robbitbhole.

Have you tried:
  • Create a playlist comprising the links to the tracks as served by the media server e.g. http://192.168././././01.flac
  • Save the playlist to your media server and perform a rescan
  • Add the URL of the playlist to Open Network Stream and save that as a preset
I haven't tried this, but I assume it will act as a radio stream rather than a set of tracks that can be seeked/skipped. Is that the intention?

Did you enable "Advanced" mode when prompted by the WHA? Switch back to legacy mode, especially when troubleshooting.

Thanks for the advice. I can't find "Open Network Stream" in the WiiM home App, try as I might.

I have had success with the Minim media server. I can add tracks to native WiiM playlists from there, which is start. What I don't like is that there is not way to backup and restore native WiiM playlists.

I would rather manage playlists on my PC where they can be backed up etc. I am using MP3TAG to create the M3U files and can access them in WiiM from both the SMB file share and the Minim media server. When I play the playlists though, some tracks play but many are skipped. I have replaced spaces in file names with %20, as required. There are "special characters" in the metadata that were extracted by MP3Tag from the music files but saving as a UTF8 file doesn't seem to fix that.

Tap the Customize icon to enable Open Network Stream.

Thanks again. All that I see there are switches to show or hide the usual streaming sources, no provision to add new streaming sources.
