Hi, I’m getting inconsistent results when using Alexa MRM groups with lossless Spotify Connect when WiiM devices are in the group. I’m using the test track “The Road Less Travelled” by Gabriel Lewis from the album “In the old country”, which is a 24/44.1 lossless track.

When I cast this from my iPad Spotify app to my WiiM Ultra or Mini, I can set the Spotify app playback to lossless 1GB/hr and get lossless 24 bit playback.

If I cast to a variety of Amazon Echo devices, say my Echo Plus gen 2 or Echo Dot gen 5, I can similarly set 1GB/hr lossless but only get lossless 16bit playback, which I guess is fair enough.

My Echo Show 15 only achieves VH (Very High) 320kbps playback on the 1GB/hr setting, while my gen 1 Echo Show 5 and Echo Flex only allow me to set VH and play back VH. If I stereo pair Echo Plus gen 2s, I can set 1GB/hr but only get VH playback, but an Alexa MRM group comprising two gen 4 Dots does achieve lossless 16 bit playback on a 1GB/hr setting. So there’s some variability with Echo devices which may not be surprising given their different ages and the relative immaturity of Spotify lossless.

If I have my WiiM Ultra and a gen 5 Echo Dot in an Alexa MRM group, I get VH playback on a VH setting (although yesterday I thought I had the lossless 1GB/hr setting which it won’t accept today).

However, there appears to be a bigger issue when only WiiM devices are included in the mix - for example, if I put my Ultra and Mini (or Ultra and WiiM Sound) in an Alexa MRM group, I can only set VH and get Normal (96kbps) playback. Also, the WiiM app doesn’t show it’s playing anything on the devices despite sound being heard from both.

Despite the WiiM devices’ better performance as standalone devices, there seem to be playback issues (from the Spotify app info anyway) when Alexa MRM is involved.

Anyone else seeing similar results?

Hi

I don't use Alexa MRM, but I tried it out a bit.

In the Ultra and Wsound groups, I can select 320kbps, but it plays at 96kbps. I suspect you'll get the same result. And if I add an Echo Dot 4th gen to this group, it stops producing sound.

Yeah, that's what I reported above :)

And if I add an Echo Dot 4th gen to this group, it stops producing sound.

Haven't tried that though. My Ultra and Dot test delivered VH 320kbps.

Bit of a car crash, but unsure if it's for WiiM or Spotify to fix. I struggled to find anything online about Spotify lossless and Alexa MRM - no point though in asking Amazon...

Does Amazon Music work without issues?

When playing Amazon Music on an Alexa group including WSound and Echo Dot, the WiiM app's playback screen would freeze..🤔

I’ll need to put aside time to test that again, particularly when a Mini is involved. I think I was hitting problems recently with the WiiM app not showing what’s playing etc in an MRM group, and would like to check out MRM resolution with the Mini e.g. will it default to SD in multi room, what does that hd/udh switch app really do etc. I’m sure we’ve tried these things out in the past, I just can’t recall the outcomes…

Had a quick trial of a the few Alexa MRM groups I had set up for the Spotify tests and after an initial hiccup, casting from the Amazon Music app to them seems to be behaving itself.

Even when I have a mix of the Ultra, Mini and a Dot in a group, I’m getting at least HD playback according to the Alexa app which is the only place that gives any indication. Surprisingly, toggling the Amazon Music HD/UHD setting which still remains just for the Mini doesn’t appear to make any difference to what the Alexa app shows - I was perhaps expecting it to show only SD, but no, it still showed HD. Makes me question the need for that setting now - maybe WiiM managed to overcome the MRM restriction that caused it to be there in the first instance.

The Alexa app does also show UHD but only when there are just WiiM devices in the group - the Dot seems to cause that to drop to HD.
