Ultra digital out with subwoofer

I understand that, if you use a digital out to an external DAC, the analogue subwoofer output still works.

Is this switchable? Can you tell the Ultra to ignore the sub out (and settings) when using digital out, or do you have to turn the sub on and off yourself?

No, there is no such magic.
As you predicted, you have to turn the subwoofer on and off in the WHA.
