Among the nearly 4000 LPs I own, this is the one album I would never part with but I will let others describe it better than I am able....

"...A modern collaboration between a cutting-edge Italian film score man (Teardo) and the German who founded Einstürzende Neubauten (Bargeld). Still Smiling is a set of 12 songs presented in English, German and Italian, with the atmosphere and feel of early Berlin-style cabaret, but with a strong, bitter twist.

Behind the songs (all performed by Bargeld) there sits a series of beautifully produced arrangements that use strings, squeaks, clunks and other unexpected sounds. Throughout, the clarity of Bargeld's pronunciation as ever adding to the poetics of his lyricism, as well as highlighting his all-too-frequently ignored wry humour. The result is a bizarre, sinister, dark album that slowly builds and improves with extending listening – these guys are just too clever to let you understand it all the first time around. Otherworldly, ominous and essential..."



Listening tonight to their 2024 Album Christian & Mauro, it occasionally comes close but in my opinion nothing will topple the perfection of their masterpiece 'Still Smiling'. It may seem an uncomfortable listen at first but once it gets under your skin there is no escape.
