Wiim Ultra shows 24/44.1 on optical input

Hello,

I'm using an old Yamaha CD player as a transport connected to my Wiim Ultra via Optical in / Toslink.
The strange thing is that Wiim shows 24 bit / 44.1 as input signal, is it upscaling? I believe the CD player should output 16/44.1 via optical.
What your ultra's show on optical in when you feed them 16/44.1 signal?

I wouldn’t say showing an increased bit depth is upscaling nor anything to worry about. Submit a ticket to WiiM and hopefully they’ll either explain or change it.

FWIW my Yamaha CD-S300 also outputs 24/44.1 on optical and It's DAC is a Burr Brown that can do 24/192. It's most probably always running at 24 bits anyway since these Yamahas also can play files from USB input. Of course today TOSLINK can do 24/192 and maybe more. It was was originally limited to 20/48, but that's forty years ago.
Just for fun, a CD signal peak at -6 dB, presented as a 16 and 24 bit word:
16 bit: 0111111111111111
24 bit: 011111111111111100000000

I noticed the same thing and reported this 3 months ago... No reply except they were going to look into it. @WiiM Support @WiiM Team

Also when playing 16bit/44khz files from a Raspberry Pi through optical.

There's clearly some kind of processing happening to the optical input.

I get exactly the same 24 bit/44.1 khz with my Shanling cd transport and it sounds great, I never bothered raising a ticket.

Maybe it is intentional to improve the volume control quality. You would expect WiiM Support to know that though.

Is it showing that if you take the wiim’s optical out to an external device I.e. is it a display error?

I've addressed this again through the WiiM Home app feedback... let's see what they say.

It isn't a bug at all, ref. my posts #3 and #10. Modern Toslimk transitters and receivers transmit 24 bit (or 3 Byte) words. 16 bit CD will just get a byte with eight zeros in it added at "the bottom".

Hi there,

this is what I got from the Wiim support:

Hi Loskoczos,
This is a display issue; the actual playback is still 16-bit audio. We plan to address this problem in a future update.

Best regards,
WiiM Support(Ethan)

Interesting. I guess it's possible to make a test on the least significant Byte: If always zero then display 16 bit input.
