Hi,
I'm thinking of getting a Wiim Ultra to improve my music streaming quality. I currently have a surround sound setup through a Denon 2600X AVR.

Im trying to work out the best way to play the Wiim ultra through the AVR and whether it would be worth it. The Denon has a DAC but not for high-res, so would this over ride the Wiim or would the hi-res be able to be processed in the Wiim and then just transferred to the speakers through the AVR?

Also, what would be the best way to connect the Wiim to the AVR to ensure no quality is lost? And does the Wiim work off WiFi or does it require an ethernet connection?

Apologies for the long post and multiple questions, hopefully it won't put people off answering!

Thanks

Hi,

I think that is a conundrum.
The Denon AVR seems to be able to playback without going through the internal DAC and DSP when Pure Direct mode is turned on, but I am not certain. In this case, connect the Ultra's line out to the AVR's analog input. At least the Ultra's DAC will be used.

This is a commonplace answer, but you won't know until try it yourself.

And does the Wiim work off WiFi or does it require an ethernet connection?
Yes, you can also connect via Wi-Fi.

It looks like the AVR already have streaming capabilities. What would be your use of the WiiM Ultra?

To add the WiiM connect it via RCA (analog input) and use the Denon Pure Direct Mode.

One potential reason (albeit potentially niche) might be Denon/Marantz/heos not being able to support bit perfect casting from the Amazon Music app or Alexa - that’s why I ditched my heos link hs2 feeding my Linn MDSM/4 and replaced it with a WiiM Mini a few years back.

My understanding (and it could be wrong) is that whilst it does have streaming capabilities it doesn't allow for hi-res/lossless audio which is what the Wiim would be used for.

I would be surprised if you are correct. I have used HEOS with Tidal 24bit/192KHz FLAC with no problems, and HEOS will probably be adding support for Qobuz in the near future. I would try HEOS. The Ultra may be cheap but the money might be better spent on a Tidal/Qobuz subscription.

Either use optical/coaxial out to the Denon then use one of the modes either stereo, direct or pure direct.

Or use Ultra analogue out into Denon and in that case best to use pure direct
