hello,
i’m wondering if it might be possible to access a music library stored on a sinology nas NOT present in the same local network as my wiim ultra…?

DLNA/UPnP discovery doesn't work across subnets; you can work around that by using relays but given that it's an unauthenticated protocol you wouldn't want it on the WAN.

Whilst Plex shouldn't need to be on the same subnet I think it's required in the current implementation, but that might be an avenue to explore.

How are you currently accessing your music from the LAN?

If you're on Android you could probably use Symfonium but you would need a compatible server.

the nas is in my office, while the wiim ultra is at home.

at home i stream music from tidal, and i also have a cd transport and an external hard drive connected to the wiim as well.

at my office i have a synology nas which has a music library in it, so i was wondering if the ultra might be able to access that library from home… but this is not a necessity, i was just curious what are the possibilities.

between tidal, the cd transport, and the external hard drive attached to the wiim, there already is a considerable degree of redundancy…

Hi, see this recent discussion on the “other” WiiM Facebook page, where the use of a Synology quickconnect link and the Synology “DS Audio” app allows access to a remote library, and then Chromecast is used to send the audio to a WiiM device on the same network as the app.

I’ll attach screenshots of the discussion if you don’t use Facebook.

Here’s a Synology link referring to Audio Station: https://kb.synology.com/en-us/DSM/help/DSM/Tutorial/home_theater_music?version=6

thank you! i’ll look into it…

You may find if the WiiM devices are on the same network as the DS Audio app that your WiiM devices appear as local DLNA targets so you don’t have to use Chromecast or AirPlay (if you weren’t using an Ultra) to play the audio.

Setting up a VPN tunnel using Tailscale might work, if you can install that on the Synology . TS network on the NAS to TS Network on, say your phone/tablet/pc, then Chromecast to your Wiim.

Having said that, me and the wife can use Plexamp or Symfonium to stream music to the car stereo over our phones 4G/5G from our NAS, so that might be enough for you?

Setting up quickconnect on the Synology NAS is quick and easy and doesn’t need any knowledge of VPN tunnelling or such - Synology appear to take care of that for you.

Indeed the current implementation of Plex is hampered by the fact that the server needs to be on the same network as the WiiM device...

No word yet on native endpoint support for WiiM devices from within the Plex(amp) apps.

Those without a Plex Pass still hoping for the WiiM PlexAmp endpoint may want to consider buying it now before it doubles in May.
