I ordered the AKG N5 HYBRID earphone today.

It comes with a wireless dongle, which allows the LC3 Plus codec to be used over 2.4GHz wireless network.

I would like to connect this dongle to the Ultra's USB, do you think I need a USB hub?
(When connecting to a PC or game console, a hub is not required.)

Thanks in advance 😊.

Interesting question…

I would only expect to use a hub if they needed additional power, but I’m wondering what the Ultra would identify them as since it’s expecting a DAC or similar. It’s midnight here and my brain is closing down for the night, so I’m probably not fully thinking this thru - hopefully someone sharper in a different time zone can help ;)

Thanks for while rubbing your sleepy eyes and writing it 😊.

I think probably need a hub, but not sure if connecting to a hub will work. also not sure what kind of hub to buy...

This dongle seems to work with the phone's USB-C (A conversion adapter to USB-A is also included), so I would be happy if it would work with the Ultra as well.

Hi Wiimer, I can't find much info on the buds, however they seem to use the same system as sony
I don't know if you will be able to figure out if they will work with the wiim from this but it may help.
I am interested in seeing how you get on with them so could we get a review when they arrive.
Thanks Ronnie D.
Hi @Ronnie D,

As you say, it appears to be the same system. Of course, I will definitely review it 😁👍. I have ordered the USB hub as well.

Thanks.

I'm keen to hear if this might work. Personally I'm a bit sceptical.

AKG don't provide any info about the power consumption of their Wi-Fi dongle so I suppose this is simply no issue (less than 500 mA at 5 V). The big question is how the Ultra should detect the earbuds (and as what class of device).

As the buds also support (digital) Bluetooth, the DAC is obviously built into them, so the dongle will probably not be recognised as a DAC. In which case I wonder what should make the Ultra output audio through USB?

I'll sit back and wait for your reports. (y)

It is due to arrive within 3 hours 😊.

I have a feeling it won't work either..
I can connect to Ultra via Bluetooth like you said, but it will probably be too loud and I will have to use my phone. Well, it is a fun experiment for me 😁.

I can vouch for the fact that I am able to use a Bluetooth USB dongle on my Ultra that supports AptX-HD and AptX Lossless without issue.

If you can do that, I will have good results with my Buds. I'm looking forward to it😁👍.

To sum up first, it was very easy to connect, no problems with Ultra playback. Great success 🤗.

I attached the USB-A adapter to the dongle of the AKG N5 HYBRID earbuds and plugged it into the Ultra's USB and the LED on the dongle immediately lit up and connected to the buds.

The WHA audio output screen shows the AKG model name.

However, since this buds requires a Bluetooth connection, it will not produce sound by itself. I need to connect it to my smartphone via Bluetooth and set it up with the AKG app beforehand.

The dongle is dedicated to LE-AUDIO's LC3 Plus codec, which plays at 24bit /96kHz; when I played a 24/192 track on Amazon music, it was 24/96, as expected.

However, when using the dongle with Ultra, I cannot control playback and volume with Buds 😢.

Once the earbuds are configured using the app, can you disable Bluetooth on your phone? I'd expect this to work once the configuration is done.

That probably just work through the Bluetooth AVRCP profile. Seeing it from the positive side this is further proof that Bluetooth is not used between the Ultra and the earbuds. :P

Yes, you are right. The app will not work, but can listen to music 😄.

Well, it's no problem, especially with the Ultra's screen and remote. It's perfect if Iwant to listen to preset music in bed 😄.
(The tap controls on this earbuds are not very customizable and inconvenience..)

But I bought a used one and it had a crack in the charging case, so I may return it 😂.

Hi @Wiimer,
Thanks for testing this out. I have a couple of questions for you if you don't mind.
1. Does the balance control work if adjusted on the wiim?
2. Can the eq be adjusted on the wiim and control the sound of the buds?
Many Thanks Ronnie D.

Yes, both function properly 🙂.
