Feedback Needed: Music Sources Survey

We want to hear from you! We're running a short survey to better understand how our community listens to audio at home. If you listen to music services, podcasts, physical media, TV or anything else, come let us know. It only takes a minute or two. Your feedback genuinely helps us improve WiiM for everyone.

Thanks so much for taking the time!

RESULTS:
Thanks for the responses everyone! We hit our minimum 400 responses so here's some data for you all! First, let me preface this by saying this is data from our WiiM community members, so it's not "ALL" WiiM users, but a subset of engaged folks on our Reddit, Forum, and Facebook group. This means the data is skewed to a subset of the total WiiM audience and user.

Top Music Sources from respondents:
1. Spotify
2. TuneIn
3. TV Audio
4. Local Music
TIDAL, Qobuz, and YouTube Music all had about the same amount of votes, within a few points of each other and claim the 5th-8th.

I think Spotify is expected, as they have around 30% of the music streaming service market share. And TuneIn is pretty common as it's free and has an incredibly large range of content available.

As to regular listening, which we identify by at a minimum using a source once a week:
1. Music Services - 92%
2. Internet Radio - 66%
3. TV Audio - 62%
4. Local Music Library - 62%
5. Physical Media - 50%

Part of the reason I prefer using Roon to manage my personal collection nowadays.

My perception of Roon is that it is for folks with many different sources in order to bundle them.
For an isolated local library I consider it useless, unless the user isn‘t capaple of managing his tags and doesn‘t know how to utilize them in a server software.
How do you use it?

I like the processing functions, which I use Roon to play both, my local library as well as streaming Qobuz. For both, my speakers and headphones, I use it to apply Album-level ReplayGain to everything, so it minimizes the need to adjust volume (I listen to a lot of mixed-track playlists, rarely play through complete albums). Additionally, for my headphones, it has an excellent Crossfeed function. I also use the in-built PEQ for very tiny adjustments to my headphones, and for my speakers, I have a special Late Night PEQ Profile which essentially applies a fixed, Fletcher-Munson-style adjustment so that when I listen after my kids go to sleep (their room is directly on top of my speaker system) at only 45-55dB, it remains as clear as when I listen (without PEQ) at daytime levels (65-75dB average).

Roon itself is very content-oriented so it brings up really interesting stuff about the artists and the albums, which I frequently will read while listening. It also brings up lyrics for most songs. The lyrics and ReplayGain features don't exist at all in Qobuz when using Qobuz Connect, but Roon pulls it all up when streaming Qobuz.

Ok. I can see that it does give you quite a bit of added value. I have have no need for any of that though. Also, I like to keep things simple. Don‘t wanna have to ponder on ‚how did this work‘ after I haven‘t used it for a month or two.

Completed. Just want to say one thing I think it’s incredible that WIIM is doing a survey like this. Do you think Aurender or Lumin or Eversolo is doing anything like this? I own Eversolo T-8 transport. But I’ve never talked to anybody on their team unlike @WiiM Team. So a big congratulations to you guys. You actually care about your customers and what they want/ think. It’s not just sell me a box and let me walk out the door.👍👍👍🤘🔥

Zidoo (parent company of Eversolo and Luxsin) is definitely out here talking with their customers in their own forum in the same way:

That’s great. I did not know that. But using a WiiM Ultra compared to using an Eversolo T8 and switching between inputs. Creating a music library, etc.. @WiiM Team is smoking the Eversolo. Does the Eversolo sound good yes, it sounds incredible. I wish it had the software of the WIIM.

I stream from Tidal, occasionally Pandora, and my own LMS server. I have a TT with built-in preamp that I use to play vinyl/78s once in a while. I have a CD player, but don't use it much as all my discs have been ripped to flac and are served by the LMS server.

78s used different equalization depending on who recorded and manufactured the disc. There are equalizers available that let you set the proper curve for the disc you're playing. The TT's built-in preamp applies the RIAA curve. I was thinking that with the built in EQ in the WAP and WAU I could come up with a set of curves for playing different 78s after they have been RIAA equalized by the preamp built into the TT.

Surprised Amazon Music not in the top , since it comes free with Prime subscription and for a little more Unlimited or Family Unlimited. Tidal or Qobuz not so popular in my country i think. Spotify , Apple, Amazon are the leaders here.

That's the only one that suprises me. But then I'm in the UK.
TuneIn is rubbish - the pre-roll is awful.
My current test station is Pyongyang FM (North Korea) which is pretty dreadful content-wise, but if an aggregator can connect it, then it'll find almost any stream links. TuneIn lists Pyongyang FM but reports it as off-line.

I use Audials as my radio aggregator - rock solid 😁

Not everyone has access to Amazon or want to subscribe to Prime. Although I am not sure, I think Amazon is mostly used in the US. Where I live, I don't know of anyone using it.

Amazon came in a little under the TIDAL, Qobuz, and YouTube Music block by a few % points.

I meant that in my country Amazon Prime subscription is very popular, and that comes with free and fast shipping plus Prime Music and Prime Video included. So most users suscribe for the shopping, but the Video and Music come "for free" and guess most of them use them. Amazon Music Unlimited comes with additional subscrption fee.

Amazon Music Prime is lossy though and has restrictions on its use e.g. it will only place artist stations and you can't play an album or playlist without it playing what it thinks you want to hear

It is interesting that YouTube Music made such a strong debut at #7(?), given that support was implemented so recently.
