Flac library on NAS - using it with Wiim - options?

Trying to understand best Wiim approach to play my FLAC music library from Synology NAS to my hifi which has USB and Optical inputs.

I have previously tried LMS on a dedicated RaspberryPi with a pi pico feeding USB into the hifi - it works but not 100% (pico crashes from time to time) and I'd like to find a more reliable and supported solution - so I can listen to music rather than mess around with linux etc.

I have set up the Plex server on the Synology NAS and using the Plex web app on my Mac all is well.

I understand that everything wiim speaks DNLA and that the Plex Server can support DLNA so any wiim product, even the Mini could work for me. But seems that DLNA only offers a folder browse - no album artwork, no different views of the library - is that correct? If so it's not going to be suitable.

Wiim mini road map includes Plex but document is a few months out of date now - has there been any progress? Seems Plex is supported on:
  • WiiM Amp
  • WiiM Amp Pro
  • WiiM Ultra
but they are all overkill for my application.

Do I have things right? Any ideas for using Wiim in my application? Many thanks

Hi Steev, it will be interesting to see what other users say about this.
I have a qnap NAS and I have Asset Upnp installed on it
Wiim sees this via its Wiim Home app easily

It offers album artwork and differing views of your library. Views by artist, album, year, genre etc.

Asset is not free. You pay for it once
Then pay again at major upgrades which has been rare - probably once every 3 or 4 years.

I have used it for many years now. When I use the Wiim, I mainly use Bubbleupnp to listen to music. (Bubbleupnp is Android app) or I use Wiim Home. Both work well with Assetupnp

Here is the link if you want to research further

I have Mimim-Server running on my Qnap-NAS, it's good, but I wouldn't favor it anymore.
If you are an Android user, I recommend simply enabling SMB (2/3) on the NAS and installing Symfonium on your phone/tablet. Very cool, fast and customizable app for NAS content!

Or even better, install Lightweight Music Server (or any Symfonium compatible server) so your phone doesn't have to proxy the streams.

no issues with lms, maybe use it as a server only? Or install on your NAS?

Thanks everyone for the replies. I think I'm getting there isn't a simple 'out of the box' solution.

No answers re Plex - this would be a good solution for me as it runs fine on my NAS, is officially supported on Synology and would free up my LMS RPi for other uses.

LMS - understood from the above - thank you - and a bit more googling than some wiim devices support lms. I already have LMS running on an RPi (it's not supported on my NAS, neither is Docker) and assume the supported wiim devices appear as a player in the LMS web app. Supported devices are
  • WiiM Pro
  • WiiM Pro Plus
  • WiiM Amp
  • WiiM Amp Pro
  • WiiM Ultra
It doesn't use the Wiim Home app. This could work but shame the Mini isn't supported. I have no need of a dac, just pass through the decoded FLAC bits via a digital interface to my amp.

Asset Upnp can be installed on my NAS and uses Win Home app - not free but maybe the closest to reliable and supported solution - and it would work with the Mini (Is this true?)

I'm here because Sonos still haven't sorted out their app - 9 months on - and acknowledge I'm old fashioned in wanting to use my local music library but didn't expect it to be this hard to find a straightforward solution.

Thanks again for sharing your knowledge

Instal the upnpbridge plugin and LMS can play to your Mini - indeed that’s what I did for my Pro etc till that got the squeezelite client.

Yes, that or Minimserver are supported by all WiiM devices.

Have you tried logging into Plex (WiiM Home App > Browse > Music Services > Plex)?
I don't have any wiim products - trying to understand what if anything will work for me. According to Wiim website Plex is only supported on
  • WiiM Amp
  • WiiM Amp Pro
  • WiiM Ultra
which are all overkill for want I want. Does Plex work with other wiim products - mini or pro?

The Plex integration is app based so works across the entire range, I think. I've tested the Plex integration on a Pro.

Plex appears as a supported service under all my WiiM devices, Mini and Pro included. As and when WiiM develops plexamp support, the Mini is unlikely to support that due to lack of memory and cpu resources,

Helpful, thanks. I have the upnpbridge plug-in on LMS - I've found it needs to be restarted from time to time.
I now understand Wiim Pro has a squeezelite client so no need for a the plug-in - this could be a solution.

Thanks, so confused by wiim website and plex. I think I'll give the Pro a try - first with Plex on my NAS, if that fails then with LMS on RPi. Worth a try!
