A new issue cropped up on my Pixel 3a this week. All of a sudden it will only charge when the USB-C cable is inserted one way round and then only after clocking on "This device" in this notification. When I unplug the cable the notification defaults back to "Connected device". If I insert the cable the other way round then when I click "This device" it can't switch. This seems to be a fairly common issue but nobody knows what causes it. My UMIK-1 microphone seems to recognised with the cable either way round.

Have you tried a new USB cable?
Try cleaning the phone's USB port with alcohol 🙂

Yup all my cables act the same way. I also cleaned the port but not sure there was much in there anyway.
That notification is now present all the time when nothing is connected to the USB port. It definitely wasn't before this issue.

Is it time to consider new Pixel 10? 🙂

It is a well known problem with USB C ports.

They collect pocket fluff which prevents proper connection. I use a wooden toothpick to clean out the port on my Pixel 6A and 8a.

I now use these USB C plugs when not charging the 6a and use a wireless charger for the 8a.

Maybe but it seems strange that the USB preferences notification is always present when nothing is connected and I need to select "this device" to get the phone to charge and that only works one way round.
