HDMI – TV keeps switching to internal speakers

I have my Samsung TV hooked up to my Wiim Ultra via the HDMI-ARC port on the TV. All works great with one exception: if I switch to music on the Wiim, then pause the music and start playing something on the TV (expecting the auto-sensing to switch the Wiim to HDMI input), the TV automatically switches the audio to its built-in speakers.

It seems that what’s happening is that once the Wiim is switched to an input other than HDMI, the TV no longer recognizes any device being connected to the HDMI-ARC port, and assumes that it must use the internal speakers. Of course, the desired behavior is for the TV to continue outputting audio through the HDMI port so that the Wiim will sense it and auto-switch to that input.

I realize this is likely more of a TV issue than a Wiim issue, but I’m at a loss and posting here in case anyone has an idea to fix it. The TV, as far as I can tell, doesn’t have any menu option to keep it from automatically switching to internal speakers (which is insane to me). I know I could just use a different cable to run audio from the TV to the Wiim, but HDMI seems to work best in terms of having no latency issues (audio out of sync with video). Any ideas/suggestions appreciated!

Hi,

I assume that the TV's audio output setting is set to external speakers, but it automatically switches to internal speakers, is that normal TV (as described in the manual) operation?

If not, there is either a problem with the TV or it is not properly configured; please try unplugging the power cable from the WiiM and the TV after disconnecting the HDMI cable, and then reconnecting the HDMI cable and turning it back on after at least 10 minutes. This will reboot the TV and may resolve the problem with the HDMI connection.

However, if this is the normal operation of the TV (which is odd), you may want to try an optical connection. Perhaps there is no delay.

Yes, that's correct -- the TV will actually automatically output sound through the HDMI *as long as* the Wiim is set to the HDMI input, but as soon as it isn't, the TV will automatically revert to internal speakers.

I'll try the "disconnect everything and then everything off for ten minutes" method and see if it resolves anything, though I fear that this is, in fact, the normal operation of the TV (I'm surprised, if that's the case, that it can't be disabled).

Thanks for the suggestion!

My guess is whenever you switch off the Wiim, the Samsung reverts to internal speakers. My LG TV does the same.

Why I dislike HDMI it tries to be too smart, with coaxial/optical there isn't any "feedback" from the device whether it's on or off, so it won't switch back.

One alternative is not to use ARC/E-ARC, then use a AVR as the hub.

This looks like some of the HDMI functionality that I have just tested in a beta version.

It did however not work correctly and I have not seen any announcements about it being included into the main release.
@WiiM Support Should this have been included in the release notes?

The new functionality should only be active if the CEC is off.
I have just tested it with me Sony TV, and with CEC off I see something similar.

The idea is that the TV follows the Ultra input selection if CEC and auto sensing is off. And that the Ultra input follows the speaker selection of the TV.

Edit: It looks like almost is working, except when the TV is initially turned on. In that case my TV still changes to external speakers even though the Ultra don't change to TV input. The TV shall NOT change it's speaker setting.

Wait whut?

You lost me at "Ultra follows the speaker selection of the TV". If the tv is set to its internal speakers, then what is there for the Ultra to receive or follow?

@sterb for what it's worth: my fairly cheap LG tv wil stick to HDMI ARC as it's audio output even without the HDMI cable (to the WiiM) plugged in. So it sounds like an issue with your TV to me as well.

If TV is manually changed to external speakers and auto sensing is on, the Ultra changes to TV input if idle.
