HDMI ARC & CEC - output

Hello!

A few details about my current setup:
  • TV
  • Media Receiver - Pioneer VSX-528
  • Wiim Ultra
Connections:
  • TV -> Pioneer through HDMI ARC + CEC
  • Wiim Ultra -> Pioneer HDMI + optical
Pioneer AV supports ARC + CEC commands on all it`s HDMI inputs and on output.

Issue: cannot find a way to auto-turn on Pioneer AV receiver when Wiim Ultra starts any audio playback.
Request:
Would it be possible to send CEC commands through Wiim Ultra`s HDMI?
To have it as an toggle option in Wiim app and select between CEC receiver and CEC sender. And when CEC sender is selected to send commands like: turn ON/OFF, source select, volume control (+/-, Mute).

Thank you.

Does anyone have any suggestion about this matter?
I am particularly interested to auto turn on the AV receiver when Wiim Ultra starts any kind of playback.
I tried an automation through HomeAssistant but is not really reliable. :-(

Thank you.

CEC works in two ways.

For example: My TV will turn on the WiiM Ultra, but not the other way around.

On the other hand: launching my Xbox will turn on the TV and set it to the right channel.

I'm not sure if CEC control could be implemented in the other direction to have the Ultra turn on a TV or receiver. Maybe it's just a software thing or maybe it'll require some additional hardware.

Best to make a feature request through the WiiM Home app.

The WiiM Ultra should be able to fully control other CEC enabled devices. It's in the nature of the CEC protocol.

The WiiM Ultra do already do this with the volume. If you use TV sound out on the Ultra and change volume on the Ultra also, you will see it on your TV.

What is this HDMI connection between the WiiM Ultra and the VSX-528 currently doing for you?
Right now it does nothing ... except CEC passthrough from TV->Pioneer AVR - > Wiim Ultra.
I tried connecting Wiim -> Pioneer on each HDMI input/output ports without any luck.

If I connect TV -> Wiim (HDMI), then Wiim receives CEC commands from TV but then Pioneer won`t turn on automatically when TV is started. :)

I know, perhaps I want too complicated things ... :)

It wouldn't be all that complicated if the VSX-528 had a trigger input.
I know ...
I can turn it on via HA integration but ... sometimes the integration fails and I end-up with either a very high volume when I switch to TV source or the AV receiver remains on when I turn off any audio source.

Adding a smart remote such as Switchbot would allow the AVR to be turned on and input switched using the WiiM remote's voice control and Alexa routines.

But as always, we know that such suggestions will be rejected.

You're welcome.🙂

Edit : I believe it could also work with NFC on various sensors and phones.

Thank you for the sugestion. :)
I already tried it and as long as from SwitchBot app works, it cannot be automated more than turning on.
Other commands as source change/volume control are not mapped to any smarthome system (HomeAssistant or SmartThings), therefore, I cannot interract with it in a fully automated way. :(

I have created AVR's custom buttons in the Switchbot app. And I create scenes with those buttons. The scenes are then used in Alexa routines.

However, this may be difficult if your Pioneer AVR remote does not have a direct input switching button. My Yamaha AVR remote has a scene (preset) button.

I managed to automate it with SwitchBot hub through HA custom integration. :-)
So, thank you everyone for your replies.

However, I think I will return the Ultra since the purpose I bought it for (HDMI ARC+CEC) is not working ... and I will replace it with something cheaper from Wiim.

Thank you all and have a nice day.
