Let's talk movies & streaming shows

I’ve also been watching the historian David Olusoga’s “A House Through Time” about two flats, one in Berlin and another in London, in the run up to and during WW2. I’ve really liked his previous series on Liverpool, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Bristol and Leeds and I’m looking forward to the next one he’s doing on Edinburgh. Worrying though to draw parallels between aspects of those cities and what’s currently happening in some places - it brought to mind the aphorism “The only thing we learn from history is that we learn nothing from history”…
I'll have to check the Berlin story. Once lived in a small flat (ca. 15 century) in a medieval street called Coin Street in Konstanz - happy times.

I recently watched The Leftovers on HBOMax. Its a supernatural drama about the aftermath of a global event called the Sudden Departure where 140 million people vanish without a trace and how those left behind deal with the loss. 3 seasons. Excellent show with a great cast, especially Carrie Coon and Justin Theroux.

140 million out of 8.2 billion is just a slight hiccup 😁

Think I may have watched that when it first came out as I recall Christopher Eccleston being in it. Don’t know if I finished it but it does ring bells

Watching the London-Berlin episode... What an absolutely triumphant piece of filmmaking from the BBC! This alone justifies why the mealy-mouthed criticism of its enemies is utterly worthless. Thanks so much for the pointer 😁

It is one of my favourite dramas on Netflix 😄
I also like the film 'Searching for Bobby Fischer'.

Patriot - Amazon Prime Original. Utterly incomprehensible tale about US attempts to scupper the Iranian nuclear program. Black humour. Mostly set in Luxembourg for some unknown reason. Bizarre. There's a hidden reference to the Simon & Garfunkel artwork for the Sound of Silence album - God knows why.

So you're the other one who watched this. Was just about to post this, just rewatched recently. Not to be confused in any way with "The Patriot".

I like the way he weaves social history with personal histories. I couldn’t help but draw chilling comparisons between pre-war Berlin and what’s currently happening in far right politics worldwide. The previous four series were just as good, as was the one he did on Empire, where he touched on the plantation of Ulster which I really hadn’t heard about although I should have known about thru the Scots-Irish connection. Really looking forward to the upcoming Edinburgh series which I guess might come out next year.

Civilisations: Rise and Fall - BBC. New but classic documentary. Rome, Egypt, Aztecs, Samurai. Treasures from the British Museum. A tour de force. Part funded by the Hungarian Film Centre (???). Four hours of history for the contemporary world of today. 10/10 🌍

Just read the review in the Guardian - will add it to my JustWatch app watchlist ;)

Just be aware that there's the usual academic cat-fight going on about 'errors' in the stories 🙀. Whatever, I found the series instructive & entertaining. There's a guest appearance of Anthony Gormley (Angel of the North guy) & a certain A. Campbell, among others.

I watched the Hunting Wives on Netflix. An adult series for sure. It was OK. A who done it that kept me guessing, but the lives of the characters seemed too extreme. In my opinion Brittany Snow is beautiful and that kept me watching it.

We're watching The Hack (2025) after finally getting caught up on some other things. The cast is first rate. Whoever was able to cast Bobby Carlyle will get a shout if I see them in a pub.

Just started with the Empire series. Excellent. Raised in my mind the whole question of reparations (which previously I admit I've always thought as ridiculous but just the scenes of Bunce Island have made me recant earlier opposition).

The Empire's wealth heavily based on sugar reminded me of our younger days spent in Mauritius driving a motorcycle down roads bordered by sugar cane & the smell of cotton candy in the air as the harvested fields were set on fire to promote the next season's growth.

In the capital, Port Louis, there's a statue which bears the legend 'Victoria - a much regretted queen'. Sort of sums it all up, in an innocent mistake of vocabulary.

Ile Maurice - Stella Marisque 😁
