In terms of high quality or international stations, or just some I like, here’s a playlist of radio stations I’ve amassed over the years. I really need to tidy the list up a bit, but you might spot something you like assuming the URL still works (not sure if the bbc simulcast ones are the ones being retired, I’d need to check that, plus geofencing means the hi res streams are only relevant for the UK)

Updated BBC stations URLs can be found at https://garfnet.org.uk/cms/2023/10/29/latest-bbc-hls-radio-streams/

Hold on a sec, I'm interested in the MotherEarth and probably several of the other links in the list Brantome provided, but first ...

I'm probably missing something very basic here. I tried adding the motherearth link to my WiiM presets, but the quality is very choppy. Is there a different, lossless link available for the "instrumental" stream? I visited the ME website and tried the instrumental stream from there (listening direct thru PC), but it too is rather choppy.

[edit].... Not sure where the original thread went, but want to say thanks to that OP (Giulio) for posting it.

It’s a while since I tried a lot of those links, so maybe there is a better one somewhere. I’ll have a look later.

Mother Earth FLAC:

Main stream: http://server9.streamserver24.com:18900/motherearth

Klassic: http://server9.streamserver24.com:18910/motherearth.klassik

Instrumental: http://server9.streamserver24.com:18920/motherearth.instrumental

However, if I may, radios are not like music streaming service playlists.
The link itself is easily accessible. What's not easily accessible, though, is explaining what you'll hear by following that link.
There are excellent 'generalist' radios like JB Radio, for example... well, those are simply radios. But listening to some very unique ones like Mother Earth or Paradise... well, you need to know them to understand not only what you'll hear but also, in the case of M.E., why Florian decided to give those very distinctive characteristics to his stream.

Thanks for this education. Giulio, I put your ME instrumental link in my WiiM presets, and it plays at 24/192 with no issues (line out to my old HK3385 analog receiver). Will be investigating this new universe as time permits. I suppose WiiM Team is too busy with other things, but it would be nice if the crippled WHA for Windows would at least show the titles of the actual tunes being played from the stream (not an issue with the other versions for iOS or Android).

[edit] ... Utter confusion here. Unless I'm doing something wrong, apparently the ME playlist info doesn't seem to show up in my iPad or Android WHA, either. I think I must've seen the radio Paradise stream at some point and confused that with ME. Or, is it that ME doesn't provide playlist info in the first place (tune title, etc....)?

Both have advantages & disadvantages

Sometime I don't feel making playlists, especially when I don't know what I want to hear
The "surprise me" of a radio is awesome...plus you hear stuff you'd likely never hear otherwise
Then there's times where I wanna hear something and maybe the rest of the record and maybe something else by them or by similar or dissimilar bands

That aspect of these streamers or from since I hooked up an old laptop to an LMS based linux distro, is why you wanted a streamer in the first place

as for the sound of "mother earth"
I understand what Giulio said right off. The quality is good, really good, but there is care to keep the levels from getting out of control and therefore is likely altered in a way that you may not prefer, but not so altered as to be unlistenable IMO

The fact that I heard some interesting tunes in the first 10 minutes of listening is something that is fantastic, like me listening to my AM radio between my ear & pillow as a pre teen

Thank you for the tip, Giulio and Brantome's list too

how do I setup this. it looks like the list is an m3u playlist, not sure how to import that to the wiim pro (or app)

any help for a newbie?

For me… the best sounding radio streams still are from BBC Radio 3 chromecasted to the WiiM Pro from the BBC Sounds app on iOS. Not lossless but it just sounds right.

Yeah, it is the playlist (or indeed several playlists) I use on Minimserver/ Minimstreamer , but it would have been too much hassle to edit out the playlist labels, so it was just a cut and paste exercise, sorry.

I did suggest to WiiM some time ago that we should be able to save and load such playlists under the Open Network Stream feature, but unfortunately they haven’t implemented that…

that's where LMS would give ya an advantage and let the device just pass the music to the rest of the system
Yeah, although it still would just appear as entries in a playlist you’d need to scroll thru. I had a thought the other day that I should edit the m3u playlist into something like the favourite.opml format and have them available there instead

LMS has virtually all of these stations listed.
You don’t create a playlist per se what you do is create a new folder in your LMS Favourites and then add the stations you are interested in as Favourites into that folder.

Your favourites are stored in a file called “favorites.opml” which is in the LMS prefs folder from memory. You can edit with a text editor if you know what you are doing. Windows - use Notepad++ and not Notepad etc

Yeah, that’s what I was trying to say ;)

In a similar vein I have a folder in my LMS favourites called “Random Seeds”.
This is the manually created entry for Blues Rock

randomplay://track?genres=Blues%20Rock&dontContinue=1

It’s purpose is to select X tracks from my local library with the Genre = Blues Rock and add them to the playlist, when finished Don’t Stop The Music/LastMix takes over.

X is determined by the settings in Random Mix (in my case 5)

Thanks. I need to dig a bit more into these sorts of things on LMS - if I can somehow find the time ;)
