Music Library on NAS shared folder?

Maybe I'm missing something here but should music libraries on NAS shared folders be indexed somehow in the Wiim Home App? I added a network share and can access the folder just fine but it's really just the folder, no sorting by album, artist, or displaying cover art. All of my music is properly tagged including local folder images but the app does not display anything like that.

The manual suggests "re-scanning" the library but I just don't have such an option in the app (or can't seem to find it). Can anyone point me to this or are NAS folders really just restricted to pure folder/file browsing?

Attaching screenshots for the folder view and hamburger menu options.

you're not missing anything - it's like the WiiM ecosystem "forces" you towards using PAID streaming services or even worse, the expensive Roon service which requires you to buy extra hardware and pay expensive monthly subscription.
With all due respect to the modern LMS server and its native WHA support, i find it quite buggy from my experience - I have a Pi4 4GB running it explicitly, and every now and then when i do a full update rescan, it freezes completely with no other option than hard shutdown. not to mention the bad support for 2 byte chars languages (such as Hebrew), and the double of indexing just because of "cApItAl letters" in artist name.
but having said that, it's free and open source (kudos to the devs and maintainers). it does works very well overall, and you should definately try to install it on your NAS

I dunno. The DLNA server I currently use has weird/limited sorting options so SMB was always a preferred method for me but within the Wiim app, any home network streaming option is pretty terrible so I'm not winning/losing out on much here.

Currently trying LMS/Squeezelite/Material skin app combo and so far I really like it. Thanks for the recommendation, @rccarguy !
As Simbun hasn't replied yet I'll jump in.

As others have said, SMB is just a fall-back solution on WiiMs. Other than the likes of Sonos and Bluesound they are focused on DLNA/UPnP servers for local content.

LMS is certainly a very competent and powerful server and WiiM devices have Squeezelite on board. So that's one option and this is where I came from.
But I have moved over to DLNA as it is simply more compatible. Almost all streaming gear supports DLNA while Squeezelite is the exception.
Having tried a few DLNA servers I got stuck with Minim Server. You can try it for free with limited features. The two year licence is around 40-50 EUR/Dollars/Pounds and worth every penny. You don't even have to renew it. You can keep on using it after expiry. You'll just not get any updates any longer. There's so much in it. And it is fast, very fast, even on by absolute basic QNAP NAS (the cheapest there is).

Minim Server is also supported by the WHA. The integration does have a few quirks but these are only of cosmetic nature.

Don't give up.

Nonsense. I’m a long time user of Minimserver which handles my NAS library admirably. I’m not forced to use PAID streaming services at all, it’s entirely my choice whether I do or not, and besides WiiM supports free Spotify…

I have MinimServer Free on a Synology NAS with many 100k items. Can recommend it.

There are tweaks available to raise the memory, for everyone with a sizeable collection. Also rescanning can be scheduled on the NAS.
