Hey guys. Was hoping if someone could explain how the music on my iPhone is showing up in the WiiM app.

These songs appear in my Apple Music app/library. Also the songs are actually downloaded on my iPhone.

How does WiiM know I have these songs? And when I play them is this using airplay?

Sorry if this was posted in a similar thread. I didn’t know this feature existed (WiiM being able to see what’s on my iPhone). Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi,

I am an Android user without an iPhone, but I am willing to answer your questions to the best of my knowledge.

All apps, not just the WiiM home app, operate within the permissions granted to them. Since your phone grants the WiiM app "permission to access music files", the WiiM app can browse and play music files stored in the phone. (If those music files have already been downloaded to the phone, they will not be played via Airplay.)

For example, a third-party image editing app can browse and edit photos you have taken with your iPhone camera. Such an APP can see the files in the phone because it has been given the necessary permissions. So the WiiM app is similarly operating within its permitted permissions.

For Android, it is possible to deny access rights to the WiiM app so that it cannot play the music files in the phone. Presumably, the iPhone also has a feature to manage app permissions.

As @Wiimer says, the WiiM app sees the tracks on your phone that your Apple Music app sees. When you play them from the WiiM app they’re sent in full resolution to your WiiM device over wifi, not using airplay.

Edit: if you check under settings on your iPhone, under Privacy&Security, Media &Apple Music, I expect you’ll see the WiiM Home app listed as an app that is permitted to access your local media.

Thank you for quick responses and clarification! I’m using the WiiM amp (non pro version). Last question lol Is this feature on the other WiiM products like the Ultra and Amp pro?
