I've had for a few days now and love it except for the loud pop sound when listening to Amazon Music HD and tracks go from one resolution to another. I have the Mini set up two ways:
- First configuration is through the "RCA out" to an input on my Yamaha S-501 amp. No popping sound no matter what I do here. Amazon and Spotify play fine although the sound quality is a little underwhelming. Kinda narrow soundstage and dynamics seem a little congested. My speakers are PSB towers. I use the Wiim Home app on my iPhone and iPad.
- Second configuration is through the "SPDIF" with the supplied optical cable to my Schiit Modi (the original). The cable is well connected at both ends and not kinked in any way. I have the well known popping sound when my song playlist goes from one resolution to another....HD to Ultra HD and back. Nothing I try other than setting the resolution much lower (defeats the purpose of Amazon HD) stops the popping. I have messed with the "Fade" and "Latency" sliders with no improvement. That said, the sound is pretty darn good with the optical to Schiit DAC...big soundstage, sweet highs, punchy lows and real clear dynamics all the way to very loud levels.
There is no pop sound from track-to-track if the song resolution is the same.....plays fine.
I'm seriously considering returning the Mini and getting the Pro Plus based on all the positive reviews I've read. I understand it has a much better DAC and output stage than the Mini. I've read it sounds real good! I can't find a bad review....punches well beyond it's weight. If I do end up returning the Mini and going with the Pro Plus, I won't use the Schiit Modi....I'll just use RCA from the Pro Plus to the Yamaha and call it a day....asuming no popping sound at the highest resolution setting. If the poping sound still happens, I may just send it back as well. That would be a shame because I dig the interface and app. It was so easy to set up and get going.
I know this issue has been discussed here....I've read most of the posts. I've tried everything. I see others seem to have sucuss with an update but mine is up to date on firmware and still pops.
Anyway, that's my thoughts for now. I hope the WiiM team sends a solution soon.
