OK, well...this might be a little dense, but...

I am a l o n g time streamer. I swear, I'm pretty sure I had something...even before a Squeezebox (back when they were still Slim Devices), but I can't remember what. And my (audiophile) streaming journey, took me through to 4-figure units like Aurender, etc. But...my needs simplified, and I just held on to my Auralic Aries Mini after the rest of my high-dollar kit was long gone.

But recently...I bought some "new" stuff. First...an Eversolo DMP-A6, and now a WiiM Ultra (for a headphone rig I'm setting up). When I first got the Ultra, I just started out...by linking up my TIDAL account; and that was easy-peasy. But now I'm trying to link-up, my 2T worth of files...and was surprised to find, it wasn't exactly a snap.

I've got everything, on an Server running unRAID...and most of my devices (like the Eversolo, and my trusty AAM...and others before it), can find the Networked/NAS share. But the WiiM app didn't. My Google-fu is decent, so I started to search; seems you've got to go the DLNA route? I know DLNA, of course...but man, talk about going back to the olden days (although, I did have a similar problem...with an FiiO SR11 I recently tried. One of the reasons, it went back).

In my Google-ing for the WiiM...I saw PLEX. I do run a PLEX Server, so...I turned on the DLNA, as instructed...and WiiM did then, see that Music library (aka MyMUSIC). Here's the problem: the PLEX is mostly for Video. The Audio share that I do have set up, I use for PlexAMP mobile. I don't keep, all 2T worth of files in there; only what I want OTG (including like Audiobooks, etc). Sure...I guess I could set up, another Plex Music library...and push that through DLNA, to the WiiM. It just seems a little tweak-y, and round-about...for what's supposed to be the easiest UI in the biz.

Did I miss something? Is there a better way? If not...not trying to troll; but I might have to give a Bluesound Nano an audition.

If you are familiar with Squeezebox then run an instance of LMS pointing at the files and use the WiiMs inbuilt Squeezelite client. Control with LMS Material plugin. Once set up it just works!

There is a WiiM Plex beta which is better than activating DLNA support on the Plex server.

Edit
There is also a Squeezelite client for Eversolo I believe.

When you say the WiiM didnt find the NAS share, were you trying under the add share option under Home Music Share in the WiiM home app? If so, how far did you get? If you did try that and it didn’t connect, maybe raise a ticket to WiiM via the more/feedback section in the app to allow the to inspect your log for the reason it failed.

OK, I guess I've made some headway. Even though it's likely what Burnside was suggesting...I kind of wandered into the 'Add Shared Folder' drop-down by accident. \\servername didn't work...but \\ipaddress did.

Now...I can access my files, "directly"...and play them on the Ultra. But what I was hoping for, was it would "scrape" those files...and present them in a nice UI? No??

Oh...is this what you were trying to tell me, simbun? "Whilst you can map SMB shares, only folder browsing is available"

That's right, unlike Sonos and BluOS WiiM doesn't index the share.

Your best options for browsing within the WiiM Home app
  • Plex with its native integration (Music Services > Plex)
  • MinimServer using UPnP (Home Music Share > Media Server)
Unlike BluOS and Sonos, WiiM supports UPnP, Google Cast and SqueezeLite, enabling you to use much better third party solutions e.g. PlexAmp, Symfonium, LMS e.t c.

Yeah, just folder browsing - that’s why I’m surprised you seem to have such a downer on DLNA/upnp which at least organises those files based on their tags. I guess I’m the opposite and wonder why people use basic SMB file sharing…

As above, you should consider Plex, LMS, Minimserver etc if you want your repository to be organised in some manner :)

Is Plex still a beta? I have it because I joined the beta testing but have lost track of what is beta and what isn't.

To the OP.
The Plex beta (if it still is a beta) is quite good and doesn't need DLNA at all. You get a sort of PlexAmp controller client built into the WiiM App.
As you also have an Eversolo, LMS with Material plugin is also a serious contender and will give you everything that the WiiM App does (except Amazon Music). The various plugins that make this possible are all superior to the WiiM implementation (yes I would say that, but it is true).

OK, thanks everyone. IDK...it is what it is I suppose. I guess with my AAM, being 10 years old and all...I expect 2 things:

1) these new devices, will have an app that scrapes and indexes natively, and 2) that they'll do it better than the 10 year-old AAM, lol. But...

I guess the "new style" is, BYO 🤔
