I have an old sony DVD player i am using as a cd player. My wiim ultra is connected by coax to a geshelli labs dac with an AKM 4999 chip (I prefer the sound of that to the ESS in the ultra). My question is what happens to the CD Players digital signal if i connect the cd player via optical to the WIIM (i am hoping to use it essentially as a preamp) and connect the wiim to the DAC? Does the ultra simply pass through the CD Players digital signal so the dac can decode it? does the ultra convert the CD Player digital to analog and then convert it back to digital to pass to the DAC which then converts it back to analog to pass to my amp? thanks! #dac

There will be no conversation and the output to your DAC will be the same as the input except if you add EQ or volume control. Then it will modify the digital signal.

Only if you use the analog input the WiiM will convert it to digital or if you use the analog output the WiiM will convert it from digital via its DAC.

All in the WiiM devices are done in the digital domain.

Using it as a preamp would imply using the volume control in my book (because there's nothing to "amplify" anyway. And this must change the digital signal, otherwise the volume would not be reduced. :)

Of course, and no matter what you do, the volume has to be controlled at some stage prior to the power amplifier section.
