This week, we're looking at a feature that helps you stream music when you’re not at home, or without a router generating a wireless network. With a recent WiiM Home update, you can now connect your WiiM device to your phone’s hotspot and use the WiiM app on the mobile device too.

Previously, you’d need to use a second device as a controller as the app wouldn’t be able to find devices connected to the hot spot.

Requirements are simple:
  • A phone with hotspot capability and a data plan
  • The latest version of the WiiM Home app (v3.2.5 or later)
  • A WiiM device ready to go (and a way to get it power!)
📖 Here’s how to set it up

Why not just use Bluetooth?

Bluetooth is fine for short-range listening, but it’s not always the best option. This setup gives you more control and better sound. By connecting WiiM to your phone with the hotspot, the WiiM device streams directly from the Internet using your phone’s data. You’re not just sending music from your phone like you would with Bluetooth—instead, WiiM becomes the main player.

This can give you better sound quality, longer range, functionality and control through the WiiM app, and you probably won’t drain your phone’s battery as quickly. You can also keep using your phone for other things, and even control multiple WiiM devices at once.

When is this useful?
  • Outdoors: Going camping or having a picnic? Bring your WiiM and use your hotspot to stream music in better quality.
  • Tailgates: Stream your playlist without worrying about stadium Wi-Fi.
  • Backyard parties: Hosting friends in the backyard? Let the WiiM handle music while your phone stays free.
  • Hotels: Traveling for work or staying in a hotel? Use your hotspot instead of trying to connect your speakers to restrictive hotel Wi-Fi.
Just remember, the Hotspot can't provide power to your devices! You'll need an extension cord or something to power your devices if you're taking it somewhere.

Quick Tip

Since one phone is creating the hotspot and working as the remote, you can also connect other mobile devices to the hotspot to have multiple controllers at the same time.

In my first test, the WiiM device could not connect to the hotspot when the phone's Wi-Fi was turned off.

After seeing this post, I tested again using another phone and it worked. Apparently there was a problem with my phone..

This is a very nice update for 1 part of users. Thank you.

(Sorry, I have corrected my post.)
