According to pinkfishmedia, they is a modification for the ultra making the internal dac sound ” way better than an eversolo master edition ”

One need to send in the ultra to let Teddy pardo do the modifikation, making the ultra a two piece streamer with a separate power supply , price is 485 dollars plus shipping . ( the WiiM warranty will ofcourse be invalid after this )

we can imagine installing a connector on the ultra and bypassing the internal power supply... to put an external power supply from them
in the very classic way, well known, old current brands for example English... naim cyrus etc

Teddy writes its not for DIY to do this mod. However, the inbuild core powersupply of ultra seems to be 12V DC .

must be doable in DIY of course and take advantage of other offers than this one
the handling should quickly be described...
could have been offered automatically by wiim...

It makes no sense to buy affordable streamer then mod it for improved sound quality. There’s no assurance doing mod would improve anything aside from your imagination. It’s simple for most part you get what you pay for. Those streamer cost several thousands has a reason why their product was expensive.

Just offering via a simple 12VDC connector the possibility of an external power supply won't look far... but also, for me, will be important because I have little confidence in the reliability in the kind of power supply embedded in this kind of modest machine.. so either external exchangeable power supply, or a short one possible, will be fine..and I'm not even talking about upgrades...
"cheap" switching power supplies being the common weakness..
the internal power supply which is for many a plus...and for me, in this case, rather a regret...

Been posted a few times already on the WiiM Fan Page on Facebook with the usual polarised opinions and ill-tempered responses. And the usual condescending “your system isn’t revealing enough” comments. It gets very tiresome… :(

Do you have any measurements of this gentleman’s power supply. And the measurements that I’ve seen on the ultra’s switch mode power supply is excellent. It adds no noise whatsoever. Adding a linear power supply to a $320 streamer and even if it was more expensive, won’t do anything. Except put more money in the gentleman’s pocket and take money away from you. Total snake oil.

If the V6 is a Porsche...no doubt its much better.
I’m not even gonna respond to that🤣🤣🤣 we weren’t even talking about that. You made a point just by making a change. It has to be better. I use a completely different car as an analogy and then you turn it around on a Porsche V6. Do you know how heavy an old Camaro is compared to a new Porsche🤣

You should get use to the fact that not all posts in this forum (except for yours) are written by one and the same person.

Where did @Fitzliputzli write anything about "change"?

This can be true . The measurements seems to be so good in the stock unit so theres maybe no need at all for any modifications.

Also - there are SMPS that measures and sounds better than linear power supplies

The Ultra seems pretty hard to disamble, and theres probably some desoldering to do and some time to find the ” stealing ” point for the DC .

How many amateurs can desolder smd components , especially on a 4 layer card ?

None!!! Plus switch mode power supplies done right are proven to have less interference and be more quiet and have less RFI, etc. Than a bunch of copper and a big toroidal power supply with wires in a big linear power supply

Agreed I have a musical fidelity V- Dac 2 that came with a nice wall wart linear power supply. But they made a power supply that was so pretty. It looked exactly like the dac for the same money as the dac. And it made no change whatsoever. That’s when I learned my lesson that changing something out is not always better. Did it look cool having the same two beautiful aluminum boxes on my Audio rack yeah. Was it worth 400 bucks no! Also, I trust the WiiM team to design a switch mode power supply that would work very well with the Ultra. Why would they give you a crappy power supply? With their responses and knowledge and customer service that I see on here I would not doubt their ability to do anything, especially when it comes to a power supply, they know what they’re doing.
