Thoughts on turntables

I’m looking for a decent turntable. Not for me, for my son-in-law, who I just learned had one that crapped out, and his birthday is coming up next month. I don’t yet know what he had, or what he had it connected to, but I’m guessing it was a basic component job into a receiver’s phono input. I am attempting to find that out without revealing that I’m getting this for him. Total 007 kinda stuff. What I do know is that he does not need Bluetooth, and I don’t think he needs USB output.

I was looking at the Audio-Technica AT-LP70X, but too many reviews say the sound is meh and it has tracking issues, and it’s not easily upgradable.

Next on the list is the Denon DP-300F, which is all around better quality, has a replaceable cartridge, has weight and tracking adjustments on the stylus, and as a plus is automatic - all things I’d want if it were for myself and none of the stuff I don’t. Anybody have any experience with this player?

I’m trying to keep it under $500, and prefer a belt drive to direct drive. I’d also want a built in switchable preamp for versatility, but I don’t know if that’s a hard requirement. I know that’s at the lower end of the market, but I don’t think this guy is a full-blown audiophile, plus I just dropped a pile on upgrades to my own system, so resources are a bit tight at the moment. But I also don’t want to drop a piece of junk on him if he’s used to something better. Anybody have any thoughts or other suggestions? In the mean time, I’m trying to discretely find out more about what kind of gear he had/has to hopefully narrow down the search a little better.
