What are you listening to?

I'm not talking about the use of classical instruments, but rather classical harmony.
Regarding the argument about writing things down: Unfortunately, it wasn't possible to record things back then.
Even the Beatles “composed” their songs.
I am convinced that there will be Beatles interpretations in 200, 500 years. Just as there are already classical interpretations today.

I had sworn never to quarrel about music again, so that's it from me! 😉

I have to say that if there's one band I like everything by, it's still the Beatles... The Who comes close 😉
I quite like the Beatles and have a few of their LPs and a lot of 45s that my parents owned but my Father no longer wants. I wouldn't consider myself a fan though & my wife doesn't like the Beatles at all even though she was born & grew up in Liverpool.

Her Aunt Pat was at school with John Lennon & became his girlfriend before being dumped for Cynthia. Years ago I asked Pat about him and she didn't have particularly fond memories, describing him as rather arrogant and full of himself ("cocky" for anyone who understands the word). I always preferred George Harrison to the others.

Having said that, in the way that music by Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, Tchaikovsky etc will be played and enjoyed 'forever' I also expect the Beatles will be one of very few that may join that list.

The acoustic guitar in ‘Blackbird’ was inspired by McCartney hearing a Bach (I think) piece done on classical guitar, just off the top of my head. And we’re already hearing interpretations of Beatles’ songs in countless covers, some true to the originals, some not so much, some thoroughly unlistenable - but they’re out there!

I had to study a lot of classical stuff for the two years I majored in music a few ages ago, and some of it was pretty fascinating to dissect. It’s also interesting when you hear classical influences in modern pop/rock. I definitely need to find some good recordings of some of that old stuff.

was 'socialised' and grew up with classical music. later it became profession. in a way while not an artist myself. metal and 'dark' music are guilty pleasures.😉

As I'm having a 'vinyl day' this discussion has prompted me to pull out a Waldo De Los Rios single I bought back at the time & of course ELP among others included and adapted pieces of classical music. Many of the artists of the 60s & 70s were influenced by this sort of music & Rock-Metal-Prog-Pop etc are all the better for it!

Interesting background information, thank you for that.

I find it fascinating to see what they achieved over the course of their career (which lasted only ten years) and how they developed.
The influence of Brian Epstein and George Martin should not be underestimated either.

George Harrison was actually more influential than anyone thought. Revolver would probably not have existed in its current form without his influence.
Something is another milestone, from Abbey Road.

Yes, Blackbird was always emphasized by my friend and guitar teacher. But Eleanor Rigby is obviously very classic. Penny Lane..., I think you only need to listen to the album “Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band” once...

For anyone who has never heard the opening two pieces to Within Temptation Black Symphony, this is spine tingling Orchestral Symphonic Metal. If you own a WiiM device please give it a listen, whatever music genres you enjoy the beginnings to this live set are that good.

sometimes i have missed discussions like that. in a friendly way. but controversial. from time to time. so much better than just showing album covers. 😉
I couldn't agree more, I prefer to provide some narrative to most of the albums I post because so many are just image after image which for me can be rather tedious and I'm sure some potentially good new music gets missed as a result.

Posters like Zap Rekowski, Skull, slartibartfast etc tend to share some of the same genres and artists that I like and therefore when I see something new from them I tend to investigate.... others not so much unless there's something else in the image to interest me.
