I’m a sucker for hard rock & borderline extreme metal interspersed with more mellow passages. This album excels at that, loud-melodic-loud and interesting,
Like an amalgam of Opeth, Dream Theater etc. From hard rock to metal to ballad, almost theatrical in places & with a very accomplished vocalist.
Excellent.
Guilt Machine - On This Perfect Day (progressive rock/metal with softer passages throughout)
Another incredible offering by Arjen Anthony Lucassen & the word “masterpiece” could easily apply to this.
On the track I’ve highlighted below the question mark seems ironic rather than necessary but then I suppose it isn’t referring to the music. The 10 min+ Season Of Denial should share the accolade, especially from 03:30 with a ‘Genesis-Entangled’ sounding mellotron & later picked guitar. Beautiful.
If I’d have known of this in 2009 rather than earlier this year I would have instantly bought the LP, sadly only available at inflated second hand rates now.
Something at a slower pace now but very appropriate for a chill-out Sunday evening...
Meer - Wheels Within Wheels (Progressive symphonic pop-rock)
‘Uplifting’ is the best way I can think of to describe this. Song after song with lush melodic arrangements, truly beautiful vocals, great harmonies and some epic orchestral-rock endings. This is an album I would rate as 10/10.
