I don't think I'd recognise Whitley Bay now. I just looked at Google Maps and I could have sworn the main coast road used to turn left to pass the Spanish City and continue with the sea on the left to Cullercoats. It doesn't do that anymore 🤔

I think it was a right turn onto the Promenade. I see the same ice-cream parlours (eg Venetian) are still there. The cinema is gone - saw Bonfire of the Vanities there along with my best friend (a jouno) who annoyed the hell out of me by scribbling notes during the whole time in the cinematic gloom. Nowadays it'd be the smell of a curry or fish'n'chips.... 😁
