- I had Naim 5i before WiiM. Naim wants to let their amps in standby mode all time. Never switch off the amp completely. Never cold start and play music immediately. Naim says always warmed up amp in standby mode will sound nice and durable also.
- WiiM am switching off from wall power itself and dont allow standby mode.
- My question is whether to let WiiM in standby mode or switch off power from wall itself - does it make any differece for WiiM amps reg SQ?

tbh, I've never experienced 'ooh, that sounds so much better' 10 mins after turning on any piece of hi fi before.
Do what makes you happy... :)

If I only turn off my "pro plus" during longer periods of absence (which is a use often the case with digital devices), there's little risk to downstream components in case of problems...
I definitely wouldn't do that with an amp of this technology etc etc... as a precaution...
;-)

(but it was quite common to leave the AB class amp heaters running, "waiting 30mn before use" etc...like the Naim heaters etc.)

You wouldn't turn a WiiM Amp off? Wow.

Ah OK. I remember my parents always unplugging the TV every night 🤣
I do that! With a wall mounted switch though. I‘m not pulling the plug.
My TV burns 10 watts in standby.

I also turn off my satelite receiver when not in use. It consumes 23 watts continuously whether I watch TV nor not.

Yup, once you start measuring power consumption you do turn things off 🙂. My Virgin TV boxes have a couple of different standby modes one of which consumes 3W and the TV is 0.2W. Virgin installed a booster that consumes 4.4W continuously which is annoying.

Naim's traditional class AB amps are build on a very ancient topology (not invented by them) which takes a couple of minutes to reach a stable operating point. I'm pretty sure that the Nait 5i was still based on this architecture. With 99,99% of all current designs this is no longer the case. Expect the WiiM Amp Ultra to reach it's full performance after a couple of seconds, not minutes. :)

You should not disconnect any WiiM device from the mains power while it is updating its firmware. Apart from that you can safely use a switch to cut the power any time.

Personally, I still prefer to press the power button to send the Amp Ultra to sleep prior to flicking the switch on my power strip. Call it superstition, call it being picky ... ;)

No, it doesn't. It's a matter of laziness and convenience, and that's it. :) Obviously, you cannot wake up the WiiM Amp Ultra using the remote or your smartphone if the power outlet is switched off.

€30-40/year...good call 🤙

i use tapo smart plug to remotely turn off my WAU every night or when are leaving home. And only turn on again when i am listening.

But i know why Wiim does not include hardware on/off switch. Every time i turn on WAU from cold, it need at least 1 minute to connect wifi and be usable.

In a way, WAU is similar to Naim, it needs a few minutes for you to enjoy!

Boot up time is a factor.

No advantage

I surely have that time to spend, every day.

And I rather waste 365 minutes per year than 40 EUR. :)

Edit: For those who care, the WiiM Sound boots a tad quicker than the WiiM Amp Ultra. ;)
