WiiM Pro Plus — Going DAC-less

Yes
but you will certainly have opposing opinions.....as long as there are no major bug problems etc.

The Ultra was designed a little more for this use... given the amp you're referring to, why save on the Ultra over a Pro Plus?
putting yourself at the mercy of a bug with such an amplifier downstream is really risky without an intermediate interface....

"""But yes... you can""""

Iam considering using existing wiim pro plus analog output to Nad 298. I have not yet bought Nad 298. Is the Wiim pro plus analog output to Nad 298 working well. I listen only to Spotify so don't need any additional source inputs.
I'm using my WiiM Ultra directly into a power amp (admittedly, less powerful than the C 298) since it became available. The Ultra is as much or as little of a prehamp as the Pro Plus. There's been no problem whatsoever.

canard is referring to the fact that with a fully digital device with digital volume control (like the WiiM Pro Plus) a software error could in theory lead to the volume setting on the Pro Plus go to full blast unexpectedly. This didn't happen to me once.

The Pro Plus is well capable of controlling the output voltage, of course, as long as there isn't any error. You can also adjust the maximum output voltage to best suit the input sensitivity of the C 298.

Additionally, the C 298 features adjustable gain. If you want to be very, very much on the safe side, you can turn the gain knob fully anti-clockwise, set the WiiM Pro Plus output to the maximum (or as loud as you would ever want it to be). If you end up with the Pro Plus being at 100% and it's not loud enough, you can (carefully!) increase the gain on the C 298 again. It's probably best to reduce the output of the Pro Plus prior to touching the gain knob.

:)

@canard
I suppose you are referring to undeliberabte volume changes.
I cannot see how a separate pre-amp would make this any better. It's often mentioned, but I'm dismissing it as theoretical scenario.

With products like the Ultra, the Pro Plus and offerings for other manufacturers I consider classic pre-amps to be a dying breed.

Well, if it's logical if your streamer is full level...no risk of sudden positive jumps level...

Regarding the use of obsolete preamps... I could also do it, but on a daily basis it really wouldn't occur to me...
Everyone has their own use and practice... Level jump accidents have already happened, and we were singled out, and... it's still a bit like playing Russian roulette with 2 x 180W

I knew that my words would be contradicted...but it is just better not to consider the situation basically as just "can do it"....in my opinion and my practice....
;-)

How would you rate the risk of undeliberate volume jumps with a product like the AmpUltra?
In my eyes this is the same as connecting an Ultra or Pro Plus directly to a power amp.

at least the ultra has a potentiometer... ;-)
I'm just giving a warning that I'll give to a friend who asks me about it (serious bugs have already been observed).

But hey, just my opinion. ;-)

Thank You for the explanation and guidance
