Hello again. I bought a Wiim Ultra a few months ago and have been experimenting with its setup over the last week. Should I be able to connect wirelessly with another non-Wiim device that is WiFi enabled and on the same network. That is other than with Bluetooth.

Thank you for any advice.

Depends what you’re trying to do, but in needs more than the transport layer to be shared - there needs to be a common protocol between the units to allow communication of data/audio between them.

What in particular are you hoping to do?

Thank you for your response.

After a long absence from hifi systems I am setting up my quite old gear in my partner's house. I set up a two channel system based around audio. And in another room I hope to have a multichannel system with a video component. I bought the Wiim Ultra and for the time being I have installed it in the latter with a wired connection through a Denon AVR.

Until I get the multi channel and audio setup I am primarily listening to audio streamed through the Ultra. I thought I might be able to stream to the two channel room with one of the several components I have got on a network. I can connect an old Cocktail Audio X30 to the same network as the Ultra but can't see it via the Ultra. I tried also with the AVR without success.

Basically what I'm asking is should this be possible with the Ultra. If not I may just purchase a Wiim Mini and use that to achieve my purpose. Unfortuately the other components I could use in the audio room don't have Bluetooth so that is not an option at this stage.

Your comment about a common protocol has given me something I can check.

Thank you, Jeff

Edit:- I get it now. It's Spotify Connect

PS I've just noticed that when streaming from Spotify through the Ultra I can select a device on the network and in that case the X30 works. I assume that is a Spotify function not a Wiim function?

Hi,

One way to do this would be to wire the Ultra to a Cocktail Audio X30. If your Denon AVR supports Alexa or Google home, you can create a group of Ultra and AVR for multi-room playback. (However, the sources are limited.)

Also, in the future, I believe you can use WiiM's DLNAcast to wirelessly send music from Ultra to AVR; DLNA cast is currently in beta and available on some WiiM devices. Unfortunately, Ultra has not yet received beta firmware, so we'll have to wait a bit longer.

Maybe @Burnside will have more pertinent advice after he wakes up and has a cup of ccoffee 😄.

Thank you Wiimer. I am on the edge of my seat waiting for Scotland to have their coffee. (I am in Australia but have road/ferry/plane tripped Scotland widely since 2009. Love the place.)

Been to Japan twice also, most recently 2019.

Cheers.

Hi, I’m a tea person actually ;)

Yeah, Spotify Connect is a Spotify feature and one of the wireless “protocols” I mention above - both ends need to understand a common “language” and means of sending the audio over the wireless “transport” medium.

I was going to say whisky but thought I'd better not. Where in Scotland are you?

I had a look at Bluetooth receivers but will likely pull the trigger on a Wiim mini. (Quite short of discretionary funds atm that's why the hesitation).

The info provided has helped me think through this thank you.

Jeff
