Will rescanning USB take the same amount of time?

I'm currently scanning a USB drive filled with a large number of songs. The process started almost an hour ago, and it’s still not finished. I have a question: if I unplug the USB to add more albums, will the drive need to be fully rescanned from the beginning each time? Or is there a way to speed up the process for subsequent scans? If so I'll guess it will be easier to go back to my previous solution and just connect the SSD to my router and use as a budget NAS.

I also thought it might be a nice feature to connect your music directly to the Ultra. I then connected a 1TB NVMe SSD with around 40,000 songs. The scan was relatively quick, maybe an hour or two. A scan after adding a new album then doesn't take as long as the first initializing scan.

However, I very quickly abandoned the idea. If you are used to the MinimServer, the Ultra server is very disappointing in terms of data preparation and use. Furthermore, the covers, which are stored as folder.jpg in the subfolders and embedded in the files, are downgraded to a lower resolution, so that viewing these pixel covers on a 12” tablet is no fun.

Maybe it's a quick way to connect a USB stick to listen to one or two new albums, but in my opinion it's by no means a serious music management system. There are better server solutions.

Thanks! I am not really sure what server is used when you connect the USB to an Asus router, like Iv'e been doing - but it's not great I can tell you that much. What kind of NAS do you use and what exactly is MinimServer?

I'm using a QNAP 2bay-NAS with MinimServer. You will find a lot of information about Minim by searching in google or in this forum. It takes some time to get used to but has been running flawlessly in this combination for many years.

If you want a fast, also reliable solution, I recommend to see if you can share your Asus router with connected SSD/HDD as Samba 2/3 drive. Then install the Synfonium app for Android on your phone/tablet and use it as a control for streaming to WiiM devices.

I have also set up a Jellyfin server on a Windows 11 PC. Also works wonderfully with Synfonium for streaming to WiiM devices.
