As per the wiim product pages, the ultra uses an ess chip, the pro plus an akm chip.
What does this mean for sound differences for analog output? Probably not too much in isolation, and especially if using peq / room corrrection.
Not having a pro plus, all i can go off is the reasonably frequent posts I see (not checked if they are all by the same users!) that say they can't really tell the two wiims apart.
I also acknowledge that one person here says they can easily tell akm and ess apart, and I have no reason at all to dispute that either.
The general consensus however is that both wiims are objectively and subjectively good, and both allow you to use any dac you like later if you wish.
So, no help at all really... You're welcome
Why do you ask? Can't decide what flavour to get next?
I love my new Ultra, great upgrade from my Pro Plus. Just one rather annoying thing that feels like a really easy software fix/feature: When watching TV, especially a movie, the Ultra display should really be off or at least very very dim. Otherwise the Ultra right below the TV really...
I've loaned a spare Pro to my neighbour who's possibly more into his music / HiFi than me and has a Node which he's comparing it to as he doesn't like the Bluesound App and I've always been interested in hearing someone's opinion that doesn't have a vested interest in either's opinions on whether there is any sound difference.
He's using the optical out in the Pro to the Opt in on the Node so they both use the same DAC.
He believes the Node has an ever so slightly "richer" sound ... the bass is a smidge more pronounced and the WiiM has an ever so slightly "brighter" presentation .... that said he's used EQ on the WiiM to get them as close as possible and overall taking sound and usability into consideration he's definitely going to sell the Node.
I have a Pro Plus he can listen to but they're too much of a pain to change their internet connection to take round to his to back to back it with the Node
If he buys a WiiM, his amp doesn't have a DAC so he'll either be looking at the Pro Plus or the Ultra so it was just to see if anyone reported any significant differences.
As I'd been googling this I came across a thread where someone said his Pro using Optical out into his Arcam Amp vs his Pro Plus using RCA out into the same amp .... he preferred the sound of the Pro Plus and it was generally richer, I set mine up like that last night and volume matched them but didn't have enough time to properly test although early impressions were he might be right.
