I see the articles and references to building a 5.1 setup. I want to do similar but stop at 3.1 ( no surrounds). Is that possible? Has anyone done this? Can I get by with 2 units? With real left, right, center, sub?

Hi

Unfortunately, it is currently not possible to configure 3.1ch with two WiiM devices. At least three WiiM devices must be grouped together to form a 5.1ch system. You can then create a 3.1ch by removing the WiiM device for the surround speakers from the group. However, with this method, you have to go through the same procedure again when you ungroup and create the 3.1ch group again.

I recommend submitting a request ticket via the WiiM app's feedback section.

Thanks. I put in feedback.

My other choice is a full AVR with heos or similar so I can play media in other rooms as well. Just seems like overkill for my limited needs. I want a 3.1 primary setup plus ability to expand in other rooms. Seems WiiM is just not capable of that yet.

But why use wiim at all in that case. If I have to buy an AVR I would just buy one with similar streaming features. Like a heos-compatible. I'm trying to avoid the bulky AVR and use only wiim

Look at something else, the Wiims are stereo/2.1 products

AVR or AV pre amp with three channel power amplifier.

If you do have or want a Wiim product then could have a pro, pro plus or Ultra is a streamer only, digital out into the AVR for better streaming features like the Wiim app, custom EQ, USB playback from the Ultra USB port, or using LMS on another server picoreplayer etc

I'm pretty sure that a Wiim device will have more features than Heos, I have a Marantz AVR with Heos and I use a Wiim Mini with it.
Have you figured out a way to bring the Marantz out of standby with input from the Mini?
My setup is like yours but I also use Alexa MRM. Only part I'm missing is getting the AVR to power up automatically.

@m49808, the correct answers have been given already in the first and second response.

You can create a multi-channel setup using WiiM devices, but as of now there are still limitations. Most notably:
  • No direct support for 3.1 setups
  • No support for newer multi-channel formats, just the original Dolby Digital
  • EQ not supported in multi-channel mode
It's likely that WiiM will continue to further develop this feature set, but don't rely on it if any of the currently not supported features are essential to you.

I use a quick select on my Marantz AVR along with a Sofabaton U2 universal remote control. I've bought a newer Denon 3800H which I know has more functionality with quick selects with more settings etc. I like video on the YouTube channel HD Movie Source about this:
