4.8.528649 firmware for Pro

Not surprising. Digital output from Wiim consists of bit-perfect 1s & 0's which cannot possibly affect SQ....so the conclusion is its your imagination
I hear a difference too, so I also have a good imagination šŸ¤—
My WiiM sounds better every day. I think that 0s and 1s are getting softer and softer due to aging. šŸ˜

I canā€™t see how new firmware can change the WiiMā€˜s bit perfect output to an external DAC and impact its sound. Has something else changed in your setup?
Nothing changed. Perhaps bit perfect was affected by something in the previous firmware.

Think what you will but I distinctly hear a SQ difference from all sources. This has happened before. Firmware changes have affected SQ. The previous version was distinctively bad. Those who do not hear the difference either do not discern sibilance, HF distortion or their systems are not revealing, or their hearing has deteriorated to the point of attenuating those issues.

Firmware updates change parameters. For example, I do not use MQA and before the updated the MQA option was off; this update changed it to ON... I turned it off manually once I saw that. Other WiiM users have previously reported similar things - settings changed by an updated firmware.

I do not use EQ but it is not impossible that in the previous version EQ might have been left on causing distortion, even if the interface did not reflect that. This is a complex system with a myriad of options. Software bugs do exist and often they affect other functionality areas.

The current firmware (4.8.528755 ) restores the SQ I experienced in the past. I am not claiming that this is better than before; I claim that it is better than the previous version which deteriorated the quality existing before.

I would like to have the option to freeze this firmware and prevent others being installed. Or... if in the future new firmware deteriorates something I would like to have the option of going back to the previous version.

Agree. The edges and corners of those 1s obviously get rounded off with usage, making the device sound more natural and smooth. 0s don't need that kind of wear obviously, as they don't have edges and corners (Well, they are round). That's just a theory though. šŸ˜‰

Yeah, sharp edges of 1s result in the obvious harshness.

Guys if the 1 makes a flick flack and the clock misses a beat it will fall upside down. Be careful of such things . This is all the fun

Wiim should put firmware update that can be download on their website much like router firmware where you can choose from old and new. The automatic updates will takes even longer as more wiim get sold and go online.
Being able to sideload should be a viable option. Works for bios updates.

Still on 4.8.526344. It's a cruel cruel world. šŸ˜’
I have 3 WiiM Pros, 2 are on 526344 and one is on 527364. All 3 have been on the same firmware since I have been checking while waiting for the Aug 31 Squeezelite version. It doesn't make sense that some Pros are several version behind. I get that they can't flash all units at the same time, but I don't see why they are rolling out a new version while some of us are several versions behind.

Having a file to download and install might keep many users on older versions for whatever reasons (like updating a router), but forced updates like this (like cell phones and smart TVs) is not keeping us up to date either.

BTW, my 3 pros and a mini are on and connected 24/7.

Germany here. I wonder how they decide when it's your turn to get the updates. Serial number, location or is it random?
I have tried rebooting wiim and Iā€™m not sure if that affect the update. This is the longest update that ever see on my wiim. Those features on the update are my liking.

When wiim mini was the only streamer they got update get delivered fast then pro came in update got slower now pro plus now available it got even slower. Iā€™m sure when wiim amp get release update will take several weeks to complete in time for the next release. Wiim need to update their system to keep up all the demand as more people buying their product.
