Advice on a weird network issue please…

I turned off modem mode and used my VM rather than Netgear router’s WiFi and it looks like it does result in different external IP addresses so a blacklisted IP address looks like the culprit…

Again, thanks everyone…

Why would your external IP address be blacklisted?
Don’t know. The last time it happened they suggested my IP was sending lots of requests in a very short time but I couldn’t find any evidence of malware etc on my PC, nor do I have tools to investigate elsewhere. I don’t use VPNs or engage in any dodgy internet activity so I wouldn’t know why it’s originating from me if it’s again the case, and why it only seems to have impacted that site, or indeed just that login page. I can access other parts of their site so I wouldn’t have thought if I were blacklisted that I’d be able to access any of their website.

I always thought that the network operator disconnects from the network after 24 hours at the latest and then assigns a new IP address...at least that's how mine in Germany handles it.

To be honest, I’ve never checked…

Edit: is that not just for dhcp for internal network addresses? I’m not aware of my ISP changing that, certainly not with any great regularity. Although on searching now, it seems it does change it when you put the cable modem into modem mode, so mine might have changed a few times today given I’ve been swapping it back and forth. Or maybe not as I still can’t get to that website. As I said, I hate networking 😜🤣

Although Virginmedia say your public IP can change at any time in practice it doesn't change often at all. Mine changed recently but had been stable for as long as I can remember before that. I always run mine in modem mode.

An ISP or website can blacklist IP addresses if they detect suspicious activity/data traffic originating from that IP address.
ISPs can also monitor your network settings and look for known vulnerabilities, enabling UPnP. Typically they will warn before banning or blacklisting.

No word from anyone…

had this once when I missed to authenticate a new device via 'push-tan'. then all my devices were blocked. was one phone call to solve. but that might be too simple? i love networking. but i hate this network stuff. one of the reasons i keep my fingers still and ask for assistance. because i have no knowledge. @Burnside writes he hates it too. i do not really believe him here. i think he knows what to do. normally. 😉

Have you posted on the VM forum about this ?
I have never found the forum that great in terms of help but it is monitored by VM
Not yet tbh, like you I find it not very reactive.

Strangely enough, when I first hit this type of issue over a month ago, I couldn’t get into that forum either. Not sure if it was a coincidence, but that issue went when my iPad updated….
