Hello All,

I want to use the Wiim Pro’s 12v trigger, but my AV receiver lacks a trigger port. Has anyone successfully tried creating an Alexa routine where, when the Wiim device turns on or starts streaming, Alexa activates the smart plug where I have my receiver plugged into? I have created similar routines with other smart devices but I’m having problems creating a routine for Wiim Amp, as it is not listed as a smart device in the Alexa app.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi welcome,

Have you signed in to Alexa on the WiiM home app?
Tap the Alexa icon in the Browse menu, sign in, and your WiiM device will be listed in the Alexa app.

Also, please note that you must sign in to Alexa for each device. if you have a WiiM pro and a WiiM amp, open the browse screen after tapping the card for each device and sign in to Alexa.

As you can see, the device name appears at the top of the Alexa screen.

Being visible as an echo device in the Alexa app device page doesn’t necessarily mean it will appear under smart home in a routine - only devices which naturally trigger like motion detectors, temperature changes etc will appear there. A WiiM device turning on or starting to play music won’t act as an Alexa trigger.

Best you can do is have an Alexa routine that first turns on your receiver then plays music on your WiiM device when you ask it to.

Thank you Wiimer. Yes, I have signed in to Alexa in the Wiim home app. I think user Burnside might be correct with his answer.

Yes, I believe that the only operations that can be performed in a routine are stopping the music on the WiiM device and playing music. Therefore, within one routine you should include starting the WiiM music playback and turning on the receiver.

Thanks Burnside. I think you are correct. I can't have my Wiim device act as an Alexa trigger. I will just have to say to Alexa "Turn on receiver" before streaming music on my Wiim Pro (first world problems lol).

Which music streaming do you use?

For example, if you say 'music in the kitchen', you can create a routine to turn on the receiver and start playing music.
There is no need to create 2 routines.

What you need is a Trigger to IR blaster. Upon the trigger from the Wiim pro the receiver is sent the IR commands on its IR input socket or to an IR Led, this turns it on from standby and the correct input is selected, if it's already turned on but not on the correct input it just sets the avr to the right input and plays.... seemless.

Hi Wiimer,
I have the Wiim Pro. Yes, thank you for the recommendation.

Thanks Theavman.
Great idea! I will look into the trigger to IR blaster.

Probably the best approach for your situation but it may not work 100% of the time. Many AVRs send an IR command that switches the state of the unit's power from its current state. In this case if the AVR is in the power on state, the AVR will be turned off when the WiiM Pro is turned on.

Whilst that's true when you use the single button on the remote control. A Trigger Blaster would use discrete commands, i.e. a seperate command to power on and power off.

On my Arcam if the receiver is already on, when the music starts the receiver ignores the power on command and just switches to the correct input.

Nearly all receivers that have an IR input have the option for discrete IR commands. Not common knowledge but these commands can be found.

Very cool. Where can I find the discrete IR commands for a Yamaha RX-V581?

I did but found nothing that indicated discrete power on and off commands for Yamaha. Perhaps I am using the wrong search words.
I'm aware of discrete codes being made available by Logitech for their Harmony Hub, but they applied those at their end to make it available for use. I guess even if you did find discrete codes you'd need some way of applying them to the blaster
