I am trying to record vinyl to my pc but using a toslink to usb adapter.

I find I can record music from my NAS to the pc using that setup but when using Phono input to Toslink out I get nothing.

I can play vinyl through the ultra ok, using Phono in and out to my amp and speakers, so Phono in seems fine.

The only thing not working is phono in to Toslink out.

Any suggestions anyone?

The Optical to USB adapter will typically be limited to 16/48 - some are more capable (24/96) but most are 16/48. Check that the output settings from the WiiM matches the capability of the USB adapter.

what I find difficult to understand is that it works fine if I stream from my NAS using the same toslink output and adapter it works fine.

Which Toslink to USB adapter are you using, and is it a transmitter or receiver, as many of these devices will only work in one direction.

The WiiM Ultra supports phono input (MM/MC) with a configurable resolution up to 24-bit/192 kHz. It can be set to 16 bit and different sampling rates. I suspect it's set to 24 bit currently which your USB adapter does not support.

One for the techies here - which is better - reduce the line in adc bit depth to 16 bits, or change the optical output to 16 bit max?

If you do any DSP (EQ, volume) on the input I would use 24/96, as it provides better dynamic headroom. Then restrict the output to 16 bit.
