Considering buying WiiM Amp Ultra or Eversolo Play Amp.

How did the interface compare? Did you remote control the unit at all? Did it come with a remote control that worked well, or did you have to do everything through an app and did the app work well?

I am pondering an Eversolo T8 when it is released.

No remote and I just used the app. App worked well and no issues. I’ve just sent back the A6 as it doesn’t support using USB out when using an ARC input.. Crazy .. Its a shame as the Eversolo platform is really nice but I keep on coming back to the Ultra as it just works ;)

I liked the Eversolo for the CD and Ripping but I went with the Wiim Amp Ultra because I can cast Amazon music directly to it which is how I prefer to play music.

I also have two presets setup -
1. Switch to speakers/sub, turn on room EQ, set volume to 24
2. Switch to USB output (goes to headphone amp) sub off, EQ off, volume 100

Makes it super easy to switch.

I took a hit to sound quality by giving up my external amp + Wiim Ultra - I think I'll probably go back to that at some point in the future but the current setup is adequate for now.

From the review:

Cons

  • -
    Flat, uninteresting sound
  • -
    Lacking dynamic and rhythmic ability
  • -
    Needs greater insight and subtlety
  • -
Some settings can be overly complicated

I defy anyone to explain what they mean by dynamic & rhythmic ability, insight & subtlety. Sounds like reviewer gobbledegook to me.
Yup, bunch of subjective gobbledegook.

Yes, I agree, although I think many of us can identify with hifi components we have tested that do indeed sound flat and uninteresting.

When I was at college, training to be an electronic engineer in the early 1970's all of the magazines tested hi fi by measuring it in a similar manner to ASC.

The higher end manufacturers didn't like it when a cheaper piece of equipment had better results, so a new generation of magazine was born using flowery adjectives as per your example.

The older magazines had to adopt a similar style because the manufacturers would withdraw advertising (the lifeblood of any publication) unless they complied.

Nowadays it is very difficult to get an objective opinion from any of the hifi magazines or indeed many on the online reviewers, with a few notable exceptions.

The Wiim Amp Ultra sounds OK, but I do miss the Parasound and I think the Wiim is just going to be a stop gap until I can rebuild my system.
It's a great product for the money and probably the idea desktop amp.

I'm just kind of unreasonable - going to go back to 7.1 surround sound or maybe even Atmos...

Hi, I've own few WiiM devices.
WiiM Amp 2 pcs, WiiM Pro and WiiM Ultra. Before two weeks bought Vibelink but after week of testing return it.
So I want to AIO device such as WiiM Amp Ultra. But after discuss with a friend he suggested to check Eversolo Play AMP.
Anyone tested Eversolo and compare to Amp Ultra. I want AIO device so my other devices will be second system.

Will appreciate any help. Price is almost the same so that's not the problem. I'm very satisfied with my current devices but want to buy an AIO device, for many reasons.

Thanks in advance!
As a person who used to have an Eversolo DMP-A6. I can tell you that their equipment is excellently put together. There are like Wiim where they generally solve software problems pretty quickly. All their latest systems now have room correction, and the software is excellent. And they sound excellent. I would say they have more of a warm tone to them. I have never had the play, but the build looks excellent.

The reason I chose the Wiim Amp ultra was Ultra was that it had more headroom power-wise, and the fact that it also features rear surrounds, which is something Eversolo doesn't offer yet, when watching movies to get into that at a reasonable price. On the A6, I had the first one. There was no Bluetooth or headphone jack. Eversolo doesn't yet offer a speaker such a the Wiim sound, which is one of the products I am really looking forward to. Yep, totally understand how that big screen can draw you in, it looks great, and Eversolo does sound great and of course includes Apple music, which isn't a thing for me as I personally feel that Amazon music sounds better, even if the app is awful. Sorry, this is more of a ramble than help. But I am personally looking forward to including a Wiim Sound speaker within the system, which I believe you cant do with Eversolo.

One thing Eversolo offers which IMO is a big plus, is a dedicated mic for RC. Huge plus!

Not an issue for me a I have UMIK1 - which I use with the PC as well

Bigger screen on the Eversolo is an appeal. But the difference in price is a bit much. The extra connectivity isn't important. .Not sure if the Eversolo supports squeezelite that is the most important feature.

Even the black box logitech duet would be ok

The extra connectivity is very important to some, as some people have small spaces, so the more you can get out of one box, the better. Having the ability to plug any type of record player into the system is also important. I know some people don't think a lot about screens on equipment, but it's the future and people like seeing artwork. Strangely, it kind of connects you to the music since so many people stream now.

I get that, but I have no need for phono stage.

Also difference in prices...£275 for the Wiim versus £800 for the Eversolo. My requirements/wishlist

Squeezelite
Screen
Digital out
Decent analogue out stage
PEQ with speaker presets

So need of the far more expensive Eversolos. Also as it is my streamer is off to the side so to look at the screen I'd need to twist my neck around. it's not between the speakers.

The Eversolo play is £599 and the Wiim amp ultra is £499 if you buy the play with a CD drive, that is £699

I have no need for streamer with amplifier, already have amplifiers.

apart from the Squeezebox touch lacking speaker presets like the Wiims- it does everything I need and I still use them.

Why would I buy a Everosolo play? It's a streamer/amplifier. Paying for amplifier side that I don't need.

Now if I was building a new 2.1 rig in bedrooms, then sure either eversolo play or wiim amp ultra will suitable. The Eversolo has bigger screen and built in CD player (which can rip/encode as well?) if so that's pretty cool, but it would need to save to a network drive (not internally) and must support squeezelite.

Sorry, I was confused. I thought this thread was regarding someone who couldn't decide between the Wiim amp ultra or the Eversolo play.
I was making the point that I have never used the play, but if we are judging it against their A6 streamer with regards to build quality and sound, I am sure it's good. But I was also stating that I enjoy the Wiim amp ultra and i stated the reason I bought it. Yes, there are a lot of people who have their own amplification, as they have a separate set-up

I think the price of the Play is too high for my use which is essentially a Now Playing screen on a 8 inch device, such as the Show 8, for LMS. The silk browser method is clunky (no full screen & suffers timeout). The Ultra screen is too small.

Sorry, why are we comparing the play screen to a show 8 and mentioning the Silk browser when Eversolo screens are nothing like that? There is full screen on the Eversolo, and you can set the timeout. Unless something has changed since my use of my Eversolo a few months ago.
