Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe DLNA streaming was added in a recent update? This should make it possible to stream from a WiiM device to a wider range of wifi enabled speakers (compared to only linkplay compatible ones). Does anyone have this working and can recommend speakers that can be grouped for whole house audio? Mainly looking for single speakers for bathroom, kitchen, etc.

So far DLNA casting has been added to the WiiM Ultra only (starting with firmware 5.2.714249):

There are still some known issues and WiiM are seeking feedback on device compatibility, so it might be a little early to ask for recommendations.

Hey now! I’m interested in the same. Have you gone down any path getting the DLNA setup?

I happily came into a free Sonos Play 5 last week, as a hand me down from my stepfather who is always tinkering and a casual audiophile.

I was trying to sort out how I would integrate it, since I also recently purchased the Wiim Ultra, currently using lineout to my old bookshelf speakers.

Welp, lo and behold the latest Wiim firmware, I'm on v5.2.721236, released 3 days ago, seamlessly connected to the Play 5 as a DLNA speaker. I had previously set it up the Play 5 within Sonos, but this morning was my initial attempt to see if the Wiim Ultra could see it. Saw it immediately, and paired with no issue. I'm pretty happy, to the point where I may just pop my old bookshelf speakers in storage and use the Play 5. We have a pretty small space, and are not audiophiles, so this is working great. Streaming from my Plex music library in my home network as I type this. Good stuff!

^pretty significant if true. I’m sure a lot of people with Sonos hardware would be happy to no longer use their software. Might even help Sonos sales… Wonder how the new WiiM speaker will compare sound quality wise.

FWIW, I own an older gen Sonos Play 1 speaker and that isn't seen by the Wiim Ultra. If I stick to Sonos and cut out the Wiim, the 2 mixed-gen Sonos speakers work fine as a speaker group.

If you have one speaker that the Ultra sees you can play to that and then group the other speakers with the Sonos apps.

I have other software (JRiver Media Center) that sees my Play 1 speakers fine. So, that seems like it may be a Wiim issue with their DLNA implementation.

I am still waiting for this DLNA support on my Pro. Its nice to have it on the Ultra but I am not about to buy a Ultra for this feature. Getting DLNA to Sonos on the Pro will basically stop me using the Sonos app for streaming. Still waiting.

I will give it a shot a bit later to see if grouping the two speakers in Sonos works when I initiate playing from Wiim. However, I did also solve the reason why the play 1 was not available to select. The super technical reason was because my son unplugged it to plug in his laptop charger. 🙂
