Hey,
How do I get the WiiM to use own preamp?
Does it automatically identify that it needs to?
Peter.

Perhaps describe your setup / how you think you want to use it.
But basically, turn off fixed volume output and control the volume from the app / remote.

Hello Mr Ee,
Thankyou for your response.

My current system consists of…
- WiiM Pro Plus.
- Cambridge Audio 100w/c integrated amp, around 15 years old.
- Focal Aria 936 towers.
- Marantz CD5005 CD player.

I’m considering updating my amp to a Hypex nCore 242MP D class amp.

By the way, how and where do I turn off fixed volume output?

In the wiim app, in the Device screen, you should have a volume bar for your plus.
If fixed volume is on it will be a full, dull grey line showing 100 that cannot be adjusted.
Press the cog icon next to it to get to the device settings.
I suggest looking in all the menu options in there to see what's available.
In the Sound section, within Audio Settings, there's a Fixed Volume Output toggle.

Thankyou Mr Ee,
Can you help me with this one please…
- If I use the preamp in the WiiM am I able to use the DAC as well?

That’s interesting Mr Ee, I’m seeing in forums where a DAC between the WiiM and the preamp/power amp is being recommended.
Why would this be so?

They might prefer their dac to the one in the wiim, although the pro plus's dac stage is, by many accounts, quite respectable. Not got a Plus myself to comment directly.
Their dac might have XLR outputs, which some insist on, or might require due to their amp's inputs.
Their dacs might have a headphone output.
They might think that a cheap streamer's dac can't be any good.
And probably many other reasons too.

Thankyou Mr Ee,

You must be getting tired of me posting.

I really appreciate your help.

Have a super day.
Peter

What is the model of your Cambridge Audio integrated amplifier? Do you know if it has the ability to be used as a power amplifier only? Generally if this is the case there are two jumpers on the back of the unit.

Hey dubj,
Thankyou for responding,
My amp is a 740A, I believe it can be a power amp mate.
Peter

Hey double,

When you say there are ‘2 jumpers on the back’ what are you referring to?

OK here's what you need to do to use the WiiM as a preamp with your gear. The 740A does not have the ability to bypass its internal preamp and be used only as a power amplifier so you will still be passing the WiiM output through the 740A preamp.
  1. Set the volume level on the 740A to approximately 25%.
  2. In the WiiM App, turn off the fixed volume level on the WiiM.
  3. In the WiiM App, turn the volume level all the way down.
  4. Turn off or unplug your WIiM.
  5. Connect your Marantz CD player to the SPDIF IN of your WiiM using the WiiM supplied digital optical cable.
  6. Connect the WiiM LINE OUT to one of the inputs (1-5) on your Cambridge Audio amplifier using the WiiM supplied RCA cable.
  7. In the WiiM App, under the Device then gear icon, set the Audio Output in the WiiM device settings to Line Out.
  8. On the Marantz CD player, change the output to digital. https://manuals.marantz.com/CD5005/EU/EN/YRWWSYloumwjaq.php#GGADMLofpisxzc
You are now ready to test your setup. The easiest way to do this is to select an Internet stream on the WiiM. Once you have done this and it appears to be playing (look at the WiiM app) you can slowly raise the WiiM volume. If you are about halfway on the WiiM volume and it is not loud enough for you then you should raise the volume on the 740A a bit.

Once you have confirmed that your setup is working, you can confirm the CD player connection. Pop a CD into the Marantz. Hit play on the Marantz. In the WiiM App, select Optical Input to select the CD player. You should hear the CD through your speakers.

WOW!!
Thankyou you so much double, I’ll give it a shot tomorrow.
It’s 11:45pm here in Perth, Western Australia and I’m off to bed, thanks again mate I’ll let you know how I go👍

Hi Doublej,
To confirm - Does that mean if I follow your instructions the WiiM preamp will not be engaged?

Hi Doublej,

The WiiM preamp is always engaged for its inputs and streams. If you follow my instructions then the WiiM preamp will be engaged for all streams sent to the WiiM and for the Marantz CD player which will be connected through the WiiM.

If you leave the Marantz CD player connected to one of the inputs of the 740A, then you will not have the WiiM preamp engaged for the Marantz CD player.

In all cases you will also have the preamp of the740A engaged. There is no way to bypass it.
