My first Album/CD/Cassette/Download was …..

I was 10 years old. My teacher had played is this in class over a few successive mornings in early 1979..
I had some birthday money from a relative in Ireland, I think it was £5. My dad had not long bought a Panasonic music centre, I think it was an SG5000.
Once I'd heard the wonders of my dad's chippy of Geoff Love Orchestra's "Big War Movie Themes" I knew I had to have this and thus it was into Woolworths I went on that spring day in April to buy one of the greatest records of all time (which I still have)

Great album, great cast of performers. Phil Lynott's guitar work!

Not sure Phil played guitar on the album, pretty sure guitars are created to Joe Partridge. Phil did all his vocals while on tour in Canada if I remember correctly

Back in the day I nearly bought Sharks’ debut album which featured Spedding and Andy Fraser from Free but I didn’t and never seen a copy in recent years :(

Mono LP, 1957. Yes, I am old

The first full album (cassette) I bought with my own money was Def Leppard's 'Adrenalize' which must have been early 1992? The next was Public Enemy's 'Greatest Misses', and following that Nirvana's 'Nevermind'. I guess you could say my tastes as a young fella were eclectic, but evolving!

First vinyl I bought myself was Chicago Live at Carnegie Hall 4-record set. I had gotten a gift certificate way back when, and I remember my father pitching a little fit because he wanted me to get some old fart crap that I still wouldn’t listen to to this day (Chicago was THE thing back then). I still have that set in a box somewhere - one of those sentimental things you just can’t get rid of, even though I’ll probably never own another turntable again.

My first album ever was one I received as a gift from a family friend, Spanky and Our Gang. It was so nostalgic to me that I made sure to add it to my Apple Music library. Unfortunately Chicago didn’t age quite as well, though there’s still time to chuck it in there if the mood ever strikes me.

I don’t have it anymore and I cannot be too sure (been too long ago) but I think this was my first album I purchased. Of course I was not too smart of a kid because back then I thought The Guess Who and The Who were the same band and I was puzzled that my album had the word Guess in front of the word Who!!! Eventually I figured it out. 😜 All my first albums I played on the large console hifi system my family had in the living room with massive 12” speakers. Sounded good to me!

This LZ3 was also one of my very first albums in vinyl and I later bought it in 8 track too when I got my first car and installed a player under the dashboard.

My, the years have flown past!

I can't remember for certain which was 1st but I can remember when I had just 3 cassettes. I had Queen's Greatest Hits. Everyone and everyone's Dad has Queen's Greatest hits so I'll discard that as I probably didn't buy it myself.

The other 2, I definitely bought with saved up pocket money. I'd learned from my older step-siblings that if you liked a song you bought the 7" single and if you really liked it you bought the album. The only way I can work out which was first is by the release date of the big singles.

The 2nd tape of the 3 was Like a Virgin by Madonna. I would have bought that based on the single of the same name released October 31, 1984.

So I'm going to say that the 1st album I bought with my own money was Human Racing by Nik Kershaw based on the re-release of the single "I won't Let the Sun Go Down On Me" 4 June 1984.I would have been 9 yrs old

I continued discovering music via TOTP and the radio for a few years and buying the odd LP or cassette. I still love Simple Minds and ZZ Top.

Then one of my older brothers taped the film of "The Last Waltz" off the telly one night and my life changed.........
