We recently purchased the WiiM Ultra Music Streamer, DAC & Preamp. Do we need to purchase the WiiM Amp Pro: Multiroom Streaming Amplifier or an equivalent amplifier to get the most bang for our money? I'm really new to the whole audiophile world. I'd been looking on some Reddit posts that say having both together isn't new, then some posts that says as a pre amp you'll need an amplifier. In so confused. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Second question that I have is we're looking at getting these bookshelf speakers, please see attached. However once we started setting up the Wiim it looks like it only has an outlet to connect one speaker, therefore we'd need an accessory?

Thank you all for your help!

Welcome.
What amp do you have now?
Maybe take a look at the recent posts re. a vibelink amp.
As you already have an ultra, a wiim amp pro doesn't make much sense, for a single room setup.
Edit - to explain that, the ultra can't drive speakers, it needs a separate amp of some sort.
The wiim amp can drive speakers, but as it is also a streamer then it basically makes the ultra redundant.

re. one 'speaker' outlet on the ultra, that's for a subwoofer.
You need an amp of some sort for the speakers.

With the speakers you have attached, you will need an amplifier between the WiiM Ultra and the speakers. There is no need to buy the WiiM Amp as that will just duplicates what you have in the Ultra regarding streaming. Any pure amplifier will do. The WiiM Ultra will work as the pre-amp (volume control etc.).

There is a new pure amplifier coming soon from WiiM: https://www.whathifi.com/hi-fi/ster...rst-integrated-amp-with-no-streaming-elements

There are no output to normal speakers on the Ultra, only if they are active (have build in amplifier). You could consider that?

I am not sure what speaker output you talk about. Maybe the single output to connect an active subwoofer for enhanced bass?

Mr Ee

Do you have any recommendations?
Trouble is there are so many to choose from!
Do you want a small one, e.g. similar size to the ultra?
How big is the room?
How loud do you like your music?
Lots of people here seem to use some Fosi amps (search and you'll find loads of references), while others were waiting for a wiim amp, such as the vibelink.

Hi, rather than me hijacking this thread are there any dedicated threads to this new amp, I'm keen to learn more

Hi
I offer several options.

1, Return the Ultra and buy the Amp pro.
2, Buy an active speaker with built-in amp.
3, Wait for the release of the Vibelink amp suggested by MrEe.
4, Buy Power Amp according to your budget.

🙂
Return? I was really hoping NOT to have to do that. We mainly got this because we subscribe to Tidal and wanted to take advantage of the HiFi sound.

We mainly wanted this to be able to take advantage of listening to Tidal in Hi-Fi.

We've decided that since it's more effort and more expensive buying additional products just to make the system work the way we want it too we'll be returning it and purchasing this instead.

If you're not sure about all the options and questions and just want to get sound, start with something cheap like this Aiyima A07 max for 78 bucks or so. If it works for you and you just need more power, then buy another and run in mono mode. If it doesn't work for you, well, you haven't spent much on it and you can sell or gift it. Getting something better than the glut of $100 to $300 chinese amps that all sound very similar, and usually pretty good, will mean spending about 500 to 800.

What do you mean? Tidal already plays in HiFi quality l, however we'd like a device to play it from, other than having headphones plugged in.
The Onkyo you are proposing don't have any streaming functionality. So you will need something that can stream Tidal and that will connect to the Onkyo.

That's a very different "solution", and one that doesn't seem to meet your Tidal requirement unless you add at least something like a wiim mini.
The Onyko is a 5.1 surround sound system mainly intended for TV / home theatre.
What you were originally building was primarily a 2 channel stereo setup for music, that could also be used for tv.

You could potentially return the ultra and swap it for a wiim amp or wiim amp pro.
You could, as suggested, get a relatively cheap fosi, aiyima, or similar, amp, or maybe have a look at 2nd hand amps.
New doesn't necessarily mean better - I have a couple of 25+ year old amps (from Arcam and Roksan) that still sound great.
