Popping in speakers when starting Wiim Ultra

Here’s my setup:

The Wiim Ultra is connected to the Fosi Audio ZD3 preamp/DAC via USB. Trigger out from Wiim to ZD3.

The ZD3 is connected to two Fosi Audio V3 Mono via XLR.

In the ZD3, volume control is BYPASSED. I control volume using the Wiim Ultra on the app or on its remote control.

When I turn on the Wiim Ultra, everything else turns on too as they should. However, two pops come out of the speakers: one soft and one louder than the first pop. Even if I start the Ultra with the volume set at ZERO, the pops still happen. I removed the trigger cable between the Ultra and the ZD3, and turned on the ZD3 a little later after starting the Ultra, but the pops still happen.

To experiment, I removed the USB connection between the Ultra and the ZD3, and switched to coaxial connection between the two. I put back the trigger cable between the two units and the start up pops disappeared.

Why is this happening?

Are you saying that the pops happen as soon as the WiiM Ultra awakes from standby, even if the ZD3 is still "off"?

When the trigger cable is still attached, both the Ultra and the ZD3 turn on almost at the same time. I removed the trigger so only the Wiim would turn on first, and then I turn on the ZD3 separately after a little delay. When I do this, the pops still happen.

Do the pops appear when waking up the WiiM Ultra or when waking up the ZD3 then?

I have just added the ZD3 to my Ultra and now experiencing the same popping from speakers. My set up is the same as yours - USB to ZD3 then XLR to V3 monos. Monos set on auto and ZD3 in bypass.
I hear an initial click from V3’s then a loud pop from speakers when waking up the ZD3.
Prior to adding the ZD3 I only experienced the click from V3’s when waking up.
Was hoping to keep using USB out of Ultra, but if changing to optical removes the popping, then I will do that.

Hi guys I'm having the exact same setup as you and experience the same issue. Have you found any solution? I noticed that the Ultra always starts with Line-out as preferred output and the when it swaps to USB-out the glitch sound comes to my speakers. I hope we can find a solution for this problem. I'm running the lastest fw 5.2.703434(that is not Beta)

Sounds like a ground loop problem. Use the same power line from the same outlet for everything is check number one. If this is not fixing the problem, theres probably bad isolation in the ZD3 on the USB input. If this is the case, the fix is using toslink , its a better transmission link than USB offering galvanic isolation with just as low jitter.

I have the exact same problem. Created a feedback to WiiM.

If your DAC causes pops when changing the resolution then the workaround is to use a fixed output resolution (causing resampling, of course). The solution would have to be provided by the DAC vendor, I think.

Have you got any good response? I have also a request pending at WiiM but they don't have any solution yet.
They have sent the issue to their engineering department. Hopefully they can find an explanation. I think it's also possible the problem might be with the ZD3.

I do know how to do a lot of workarounds to get it working but I would like to have it the ordinary way. Just to send music to my streamer and the chain starts up without any peaking sound to break my speakers. I have tested 2 ZD3 Dac's and the result is the same.

That is not a surprise. Optical connection only transfers pure audio signals whereas USB, being metal, has potential to delivery other electronic signals like ground issues or DC.

Or maybe because there is a initial negotiation about frequency etc. implemented in software, when using USB. The DAC may start output before this is in place.

I tried to modify a USB cable and remove first the +5V wire with no success and then the ground wire and still the same behavior.
