I thought I found a discussion on this once before but cant seem to find it now or I'm confused but I'm just wondering if there is any preferred output either RCA or Optical into a device (speaker) that can accept both an an input.

So to clarify, current setup is: Record Player (Audio-Technica at-lp120xusb) to Phono-preamp (Schiit Mani 2) via RCA.
Phono Pre-Amp into WiiM Pro plus via RCA.
WiiM pro plus into powered speaker via Optical. Or is RCA preferred for this type of setup? (speaker accepts both)

I realize some purists would nix having the WiiM in the mix but I'm doing this for multiroom audio.

imo, whichever you prefer / is most convenient; there really is no right or wrong. Or spoon.
Note that the speaker may digitise the analog input (I've not checked what the Rivas do), thus being less ideal / pure.

Yeah, that's the thing, I have both and can do both but decided to use the optical when first setting up. The speaker is an Andover Audio Spinmax 2 which accepts both RCA and Optical for input. I didn't try playing around yet (listening to both) but I was wondering if there was any logical reason to use one over the other.

If the rca connection gives you noise, humming etc. then stick with optical as this provides isolation..
If you find you prefer rca, no problem.
If the mere thought of another adc / dac step (if the speakers do digitise the rca input) bothers you then stick with optical.

Really, the only way for you to not wonder which is better, for you, is to try both, then you can be happy with your choice.
(I hope you realise I mean that nicely / constructively!)

Yeah, I was planning on fiddling with it all on the weekend (when no one interrupts me, lol) but I wanted some input prior. I was torn about putting the WiiM in this setup because I was trying to keep it simple/"pure" as possible but I always miss the multiroom option...

I did my usual searching online but info seems all over the place and I was getting a bit confused understanding it.
