Would lowering 8kHz (and 4kHz if necessary) in GEQ improve the situation?

I think you need to investigate the cause (frequency) of the annoying sound, and you may be able to find the cause by trying WiiM's Room correction.

Room correction is obviously the way to go here, but tbh, and to my ears, modern B&W speakers do have tendancy to sound 'shouty'.
