When researching DACs recently I looked at all DACs no matter what the price range was. In that search measurements as well as overall sound quality were equally important. I read many reviews on different sites and also looked at which DACs seemed to show up often for sale used. I considered DACs from Topping, SMSL, RME, Benchmark, Denafrips and others. Looked briefly at Schitt but their lack of DSD support quickly eliminated them...Thanks. Great data. Even more inaudible than the Ultra.
Of course I see the possible benefits of differential outputs, which the Ultra is lacking.
The USB output of the Ultra to the USB input of my Pontus 15th is working fine. The odd thing is when I first got the Pontus 15th it would not work with a USB hub. It worked fine direct from the Ultra to the Pontus 15th though. Then tried reconnecting the USB hub and it now works fine.Going into a Denafrips Pontus II, the optical works fine but I can't get either the HDMI or USB to read or work. BTW is there an advantage to running the USB over the optical anyway?
Some claim there may be an improvement because the clock on the external DAC will be used for a usb connection. Try it and decide which you prefer. Is there an advantage to using USB vs coaxial or optical?
I wish I could! I'm wondering if the Ultra USB out isn't compatible with the Pontus II... so I may be relegated to using coaxial or optical. Or sell the Wiim and get something that actually works with the Pontus. Some claim there may be an improvement because the clock on the external DAC will be used for a usb connection. Did you select the USB Input on the front panel of the Pontus? As posted earlier I'm having no issues using USB with the Ultra and a Pontus 15th. Is USB Out selected in the Ultra's Audio Output setting menu? If you do have you tried a different USB cable?I wish I could! Yes to all except a different USB cable as I don't have one, but why wouldn't the display for USB be illuminated like the others regardless of whether I have a cable hooked up or not? (The other outputs are illuminated / switchable and I don't have anything plugged into them like the Coax)Did you select the USB Input on the front panel of the Pontus? Don’t know - it’s the same in the app, usb doesn’t even appear as an output option unless a live external DAC is detected.Yes to all except a different USB cable as I don't have one, but why wouldn't the display for USB be illuminated like the others regardless of whether I have a cable hooked up or not? I would try powering off and unplugging both and see what happens. Try unplugging and reconnecting the USB cable as well. I did not see the option for the USB output as well when first setting up the Ultra.Yes to all except a different USB cable as I don't have one, but why wouldn't the display for USB be illuminated like the others regardless of whether I have a cable hooked up or not? A USB audio connection is in both directions and there is an initial negotiation between DAC and Ultra.Don’t know - it’s the same in the app, usb doesn’t even appear as an output option unless a live external DAC is detected.
Yup exactly! Very frustrating... I've tried rebooting both devices, unplugging the Ultra etc with no luck. Pretty crappy experience honestly for a new product.Don’t know - it’s the same in the app, usb doesn’t even appear as an output option unless a live external DAC is detected.
It looks like the DAC is not initiating the connection, else you would see it enabled in the WiiM.Yup exactly! Very frustrating... I've tried rebooting both devices, unplugging the Ultra etc with no luck. Pretty crappy experience honestly for a new product.
It is a very New feature which wasn't available when the Ultra was launched, so please be patient as it evolves.Pretty crappy experience honestly for a new product.
Yup. Wish I knew how to get around it.It looks like the DAC is not initiating the connection, else you would see it enabled in the WiiM.
Yes true, but had I understood this issue ahead of time (time to stop trusting YT reviewers maybe?) I wouldn't have gone down this road. This issue has come up in other threads I'm seeing and I haven't run across any solution in all the time this item has been on the market. Sorry for the negativity, but I've spent what, 5 hours or so trying to solve this with no result so I'm a bit frustrated. It is a very New feature which wasn't available when the Ultra was launched, so please be patient as it evolves.
I’m sure it’s been mentioned in a previous thread that this behaviour isn’t unique to WiiM devices.Yup exactly! Very frustrating... I've tried rebooting both devices, unplugging the Ultra etc with no luck. Pretty crappy experience honestly for a new product.
