Going into a Denafrips Pontus II, the optical works fine but I can't get either the HDMI or USB to read or work. BTW is there an advantage to running the USB over the optical anyway?

Welcome.
Is the Pontus set to usb input for that photo?
I seem to recall some other posts about pontus here - try a search, I will too.

HDMI on the wiim is purely an ARC input, not sure how you are trying to use it.

This post at least shows it probably ought to work (albeit to a 15th).
"Pontus 15th is a great match with the Ultra using the USB output"

The USB output of the Ultra to the USB input of my Pontus 15th is working fine. The odd thing is when I first got the Pontus 15th it would not work with a USB hub. It worked fine direct from the Ultra to the Pontus 15th though. Then tried reconnecting the USB hub and it now works fine.

The HDMI port on the Pontus is actually an i2S input and not a standard HDMI input.

Is there an advantage to using USB vs coaxial or optical?
Some claim there may be an improvement because the clock on the external DAC will be used for a usb connection. Try it and decide which you prefer.

I wish I could! I'm wondering if the Ultra USB out isn't compatible with the Pontus II... so I may be relegated to using coaxial or optical. Or sell the Wiim and get something that actually works with the Pontus.

What's weird is even when I have nothing connected in the USB out of the Ultra the option (as seen in my original post pic) is dimmed indicating it isn't available. Is it possible this unit is defective? I started a ticket with Wiim, hopefully they'll chime in soon. BTW thanks everyone for all the input so far!

Did you select the USB Input on the front panel of the Pontus? As posted earlier I'm having no issues using USB with the Ultra and a Pontus 15th. Is USB Out selected in the Ultra's Audio Output setting menu? If you do have you tried a different USB cable?

Yes to all except a different USB cable as I don't have one, but why wouldn't the display for USB be illuminated like the others regardless of whether I have a cable hooked up or not? (The other outputs are illuminated / switchable and I don't have anything plugged into them like the Coax)

Don’t know - it’s the same in the app, usb doesn’t even appear as an output option unless a live external DAC is detected.

I would try powering off and unplugging both and see what happens. Try unplugging and reconnecting the USB cable as well. I did not see the option for the USB output as well when first setting up the Ultra.

A USB audio connection is in both directions and there is an initial negotiation between DAC and Ultra.

Yup exactly! Very frustrating... I've tried rebooting both devices, unplugging the Ultra etc with no luck. Pretty crappy experience honestly for a new product.

It looks like the DAC is not initiating the connection, else you would see it enabled in the WiiM.

It is a very New feature which wasn't available when the Ultra was launched, so please be patient as it evolves.
Yes true, but had I understood this issue ahead of time (time to stop trusting YT reviewers maybe?) I wouldn't have gone down this road. This issue has come up in other threads I'm seeing and I haven't run across any solution in all the time this item has been on the market. Sorry for the negativity, but I've spent what, 5 hours or so trying to solve this with no result so I'm a bit frustrated.

I’m sure it’s been mentioned in a previous thread that this behaviour isn’t unique to WiiM devices.
